Next I drilled the holes for the screws which will mount the XLR jack. I went with a 3/32" bit. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3601/3325228224_6aa75e3671.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3582/3324395341_67ffc35571.jpg And then a 13/64" bit for the countersink - not a very pro way to do it, I know,...

Thanks for the encouragement, fellas. I am enjoying this build so far, the metalwork is actually pretty enjoyable. My problem is that I'm a) inept with most mechanical tools and b) a perfectionist - so building stuff can be pretty frustrating for me. Anyways - when I left off I was putting the XLR j...

now to put the pieces together. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3426/3312915363_26e9c46dfc_o.jpg I found out the hard way that the washer doesn't fit the tube. Naturally, I was tempted to file it down, but opted instead to simply do without the washer. That little PVC collar is a very tight fit. I co...

At this point, I'm giving myself a C- on the metal work. Next up, I wanted to fit the XLR jacks and drill the screw-holes for them - I figured that would be a no brainer. The XLR jack nuts don't fit into the tube, so here they are just before having their pointy bits filed off: http://farm4.static.f...

Here's what they look like after a little filing and sanding. I decided to embrace the crudeness of my metal work, and went with a mottled / burnished treatment for the tubes. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3321/3313756292_b6b44202da_o.jpg The one on the left is the first one I did... I decided to t...

Here's the 1" copper tube with the handy template applied. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3459/3313756140_5233b34610_o.jpg Unless you count fashioning an emergency hash pipe out of an empty beer can, I haven't done anything like metalwork since 9th grade shop class. I wasn't any good at it then, and...

So I got lucky and scored a couple Alice kits from Scodiddly, after somebody else bailed on their purchase (thanks, whoever you are). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3349/3312922717_8c488ac50d_o.jpg Scott packs a mean kit. You've gotta respect a guy who goes for genuine Ziploc brand bags. http://farm...

OK, and compressors (dynamioc effects) are better used in insert points, and reverbs and delays are better used in aux sends? not necessarily - using the aux send for fx will let you blend the effected signal with the dry signal, where putting fx on the insert will give you a 100% effected signal. ...

Otari MX5050 MkIV-4: what's it worth?
Otari MX5050 MkIV-4: Four-Track 1/2 Inch Reel To Reel I came across this used. Looks pretty clean and straight, supposedly came out of a radio station and was maintained, but there's no service records, and it's been used by laypersons for at least a couple of years since leaving the radiostation, l...

It is on wheels... but a bigger brother to yours. "reefer" in this case means refrigerated. Like so: http://www.publiquip.com/photo/Wabash-SB3-Max-Trailer.jpg Steel framed floor, steel corner posts, and there may or may not be steel or aluminum studs spaced 4' ... there are wood studs at 12", I'm no...

of course, when you are done with this project (and story), I expect a version put to music too... something in the vein of alice's restaurant, perhaps? this is shaping up to be a great thread. I'm on the edge of my seat after that last photo - it looked rough enough dressed up, but naked it...
