Re: Recommend a decent pre for around $300?

If you can save up another $175 you could get a RNP which has 2 preamps of higher quality than any of those mentioned here. Otherwise I guess I'd suggest a VTB-1 - it's decent quality for the money, and save up the remainder for a RNP later, or maybe pick up another mic or a RNC compressor.

Re: recording bagpipes

Hmmm, I was thinking that maybe just a stereo pair might do the trick, sounds like that might be the best way to go with maybe a few other mics up just as backups. I'm not sure what the room will be like either, but I will be able to check out a practice ahead of time. If their space is not that gre...

Re: recording bagpipes

Thanks CG; we'll see how awesome it turns out. One of the drummers was in a band with me for a long time and he got me the gig. His other band is kinda pop punk and I'll be recording them soon also, but I'm looking forward to this project more than that one even though I typically like more rockin' ...

recording bagpipes

Anyone had any experience or knowledge about recording bagpipes? I'm going to be recording a group with 16 bagpipers and 2 snare drums. They normally play in a circle. From what I know, I'll need mics in front as well as behind to capture the sound coming out of the pipes as well as the bag (hope th...

Re: Apple duel Monitor

I've never noticed any slowdown running dual monitors, and if you're doing DAW work (and don't have a cinema display or something) you'll really appreciate the extra real estate. You can pick up a Radeon 7000 PCI for pretty cheap ($120 new?) that I'm pretty sure has a DVI output (and also supports d...

Re: Converting to MP3

Exactly - that looks like way too much work to make an mp3. I've never had a problem with the quality of iTunes mp3s - they sound fine to me (as far as mp3s go anyway). That being said, if you're on a mac and want to try out LAME it seems like "iTunes LAME Encoder" would be the way to go. Find it on...

Re: An Invitation....

Sounds like a good show, but I went to listen to the archive and I can't listen on my Mac - "the file format is invalid." Must be the latest Windows Media format or something (audio mp3 encoded maybe?). Usually WMP files play fine for me. Streaming seems to work though, so I guess that's good. I'd a...

Re: compressor volume/gain

I've always automatically used compressors on the inserts, but with all the talk I've seen recently of "multing" a track and compressing that and bringing it back underneath I never even thought of just running it from a send. It seems like that would work just as well and could give someone with a ...

Re: Sans Amp for Bass?

I've got one of the original SansAmps and while I've never gotten a really good recordable guitar sound out of it, it kills on bass. Like New said, it almost always sits well in the track and you can go from a bright thinner sound to a big fat distorted sound pretty easily. I've always liked pushing...

Re: recycling old g3

JES - Apparently they're removing support for any non-built-in USB mac in 10.3 (so you won't be able to install 10.3). So the iMacs, iBooks and Blue G3s are OK but beiges might not be since they use the old ADC connectors for keyboard and mouse. I guess they want to stop supporting that standard lik...

Re: recycling old g3

I've got a similar model as my second computer - ran Logic 4.8 on it for a while before finally getting my PowerBook. I upgraded it with a Rage128 video card, a firewire/usb card, and 40G Hard Drive. It runs OS X, not really snappy but not too bad - fine for email, surfing, etc. though. Photoshop ru...

Re: posse in the studio?

PBR may be a NW thing, but even more so is... Schmidt! My old band was kind of an metal/punk/indie type thing, and Schmidt fits all of BM's (uh, that's black mariah's) catagories for those - it was available (gotta love those suitcases), cheap (duh), and "in" (in the can, in the stomach, in the carp...

Re: digital delay

I recently got a Digitech XDD pedal purely for the reason that it doesn't cut off your repeats when you switch it off. But after using it for a while it really isn't working for me - it won't run long on a battery (and freaks out when it runs low), hisses like crazy through my marshall, and is micro...
