Well, lesse.... there was that period we was enamored with prog rock... I still can listen to King Crimson and actually like Il Balletto Di Bronzo (Ys), but all the rest (and I mean ALL) of the math-rock experiments just sound like... well... counting exercises. It strikes me as incredibly boring , ...

Noone's mentioned Tangent mixers... talk about lo-fi! Makes the Biamps look like an API. :D

I rented frequently from David Denny for 7 years... great guy, great gear. Not sure if he is still in the biz, but if he is, look him up.

Brian, you seem to dislike all Mackie products based on past experiences with prior products. I must say, I'm no fan of earlier Mackie offerings (and some of their current product line, too - the Big Knob and their studio monitors leave me real unimpressed), but if you haven't used an Onyx extensive...

There's a bunch of happy ADK customers over on the nuendo forum, and I've seen well-working machines from him. The parts are good, the price is not *that* much higher than you'd pay without waiting for sales for each part, and Scott over at ADK has been a helpful member to the pro audio community fo...

It's doubtful I would have bought

Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
Budgie (a buncha albums)
Il Baletto di Bronzo - Ys

if it hadn't been for the cover.

Of those, I only still listen to "Ys" - still an amazing album, 34 years later.

Yeah, it's not clear what you would do with it... it's not like the Mackie's "analog summing" would really add that much value, and if you're just looking for a bunch of pres I'd put the money in an API rack with different colors of boutique pres. If it's the control feature, a used Control|24 would...

The Onyx board preamps (I have a 1220) really aren't all that bad. Way better than any of the VLZ-series or earlier Mackie pres, better than stock pres in the Digi001 or Digi002, from what I can tell a slight bit better than the preamps in a Control|24 (but I haven't done an AB test on those - just ...

Used to work on them a lot - both for stereo and 5.1 projects. Our studio got rid of a pair of Meyer HD-1s after we got the ASP8s - and the genelec 1031s seemed quite irrelevant, too. No ear fatigue, mixes translated better than ever, definitely not scooped at all. Overall, alongside Genelec 8040as,...

I think that my 2.5 years of calculus, year and a half of college physics, and fft programming background have been helpful assets for being an audio engineer. Acoustics and digital signal processing actually make sense for the most part, rather than relying on "faith" to steer me thru my sessions. ...

Have a system 6 and a MD1 - never any noticeable hum or hiss, and I used it a lot of quiet sources.

Maybe a cable issue? Electrical problem? Or the tube, like everyone else suggested...

It's difficult in some places to get zoning. I tried for several years in San Francisco with 2 studios I owned and it was impossible. San Francisco had designed their zoning in such a way that almost no single property could even become zoned for a recording-studio like space. Some pre-existing stud...
