Re: How big of difference between Oktava SDC and Neumann KM'
i use the akg 451 reissues. you can get em for around 350 each i believe. they're a touch bright but they have really awesome transient response...really awesome on picked acoustic or as overheads...good on guitar amps too if you're trying to get some different flavors cause it's got a -10 and -20 p...

Re: Panning Techniques
yeah i try to get the drums close to mono at least kick and snare...toms sound bigger panned and hihats, ride and cymbals work well in a panned configuration. i think for your kind of music you could try getting the drums in mono and panning them whereever...my philosophy is to have the meat and pot...

Re: Didn't Mercury Rev Record on Film?
i got the tape op featuring dave fridmann a few months back. i too have been mystified by this 35mm magnetic film thing. i wonder if it's film w/ a magnetic strip or the entire 35mm film is magnetically coated. in the interview he said that it was the ultimate hi-fi storage media that never really t...

Re: small-diaphragm condenser microphones
akg 451s the reissues are pretty affordable and sound great on acoustics and overheads and even as rooms. very snappy overall and nice in the midrange. word,

Re: best wayto hook a compressor to a 2 buss mix without ins
hook it up in line between the console and the 2 track and monitor out the 2 track...if your board can't monitor the 2 track take the outs from your two track and input those to your monitor/monitor amp

Re: Sytek MPX-4AII
i think the syteks are a good value. i have a set of 4 benchmarks which are a similar design and sell for about the same. they're good super clean pres w/ lots of gain for recording acoustic instruments and are good at rendering the character of the mic/instrument rather than adding any extra charac...

Re: Stereo vs. Mono "Pet Sounds"
not to be a pedant, the stereo is cool in a novelty sort of way...the original was meant to be mono and it also has a bunch of characteristics that are missing from the stereo...like extra distortion/cool sounding compression effects, etc...apparently some of the things are different like the bridge...

Re: Guitar Speakers
eminence makes a bunch of cheap and good guitar speakers. just check the wattage of your amp and the impedance of the speaker and get a match. generally using a speaker rated closer to the wattage of your amp achieves a more classic tone that takes into account speaker breakup...if you want maximum ...

hearing music for 18 musicians for the first time was a real revelation. only a handful of cds have informed me as much about the possibilities of performance/composition. many props to the master...

Re: steve reich, gyorgy ligetti, john cage
La Legend D'Eer is another favorite of mine, if you wanna get into electroacoustics. Who doesn't like listening to it? That's crazy talk. But "Orient/Occident" is probably my favorite electroacoustic piece ever. The concept of LaMonte Young is great, but does anyone have any idea how to find any of...

uh kick/regulate your drug/cigarette habit...other tip: hot dogs, baked beans and cheap beer...the gastronomic distress is worth it. also like little things add up...like with me i buy like a bunch of cds and it's like at the end of the month the bill tallies up to 200 bucks or something...if you ge...

Re: Albums you missed the boat on
my bloody valentine loveless slowdive souvlaki when i first heard these recordings my senior year of high school in 1996 they changed my life. they still continue to haunt me. while i haven't been fixated on that sort of sound, they did open me up to new ways of looking at music and you can't ask fo...
