RIP Lou Reed
Cranky, brilliant, irreplaceable. Along with his great gift for melody (yes, melody!), he was one of rock's greatest ever lyricist. I hope he's remembered that way. Shit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hugY9CwhfzE Lou Reed, a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fif...

Thanks for catching that Nate. Man, it's a mystery wrapped in a puzzle inside an enigma with this mic. So it's a two-transistor circuit? Which means it's probably NOT just a lollipop version of all those K67/Schoeps circuit mics out there. I'd like to try modding this mic, but I'm not sure where to ...

Also, didn't those MXL 603's have an issue with the capsule being recessed too far into their standard pencil-style mic body? I'm not sure if that's something that was considered an issue with it as much as it's something that is changed to make them more like KM84s in the mods that Jolymod does. G...

Thanks Mike. Very intriguing... assuming that's true, then these should be easy to upgrade (I seem to remember there are 2 or 3 caps that get replaced for the biggest improvement - can't wait to try that!). Also, didn't those MXL 603's have an issue with the capsule being recessed too far into their...

Anyone ever solve the mystery of the ACM 100?
Arise, zombie thread... this mystery still has me stumped, so I'm bringing you back to life. Did anyone ever figure out the lineage of these odd bird TNC ACM-100 mics ? The great TNC Mic Group Buy of 2008 apparently didn't involve any custom mic designs (we've seen every other TNC mic many times ove...

Thanks for the replies guys. Here's what I really want to know: Has anyone tried opening these up and repairing them? Is there easy access to the inside? What's the wiring like? Is it decent electronics-grade cabling? Does it solder well? Can the drivers be swapped quickly if one blows? One thing I'...

[Phones!] Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones - repairable?
Seems those AT ATH-M50's have become pretty popular around here these last few years. I'm getting sick of trying to solder that crazy plast-o-wire in all my 7506 cans every time an end gets lopped off or the left-side goes intermittent on a client. So how easy to repair, solder, etc. are the AT cans...

Probably worth mentioning that Steinberg did a complete redesign of the comping paradigm in Cubase 6 (and its sister product, the new Nuendo release 5.5). I'm talking about how lanes of takes are edited, split, etc. into finished comps. Now the software works more like, say, Sony Vegas or Reaper - i...

Ah, yes Detroit... city of my birth
Detroit is often blighted and bizarre. It's very DIY. It's cool, if you like that sort of thing. Go to the Motown Museum. Seriously. It's the old Motown recording studio(plus offices, etc). Amazingly, it's still there. And - this part is very Detroit - basically it's almost like it was. They just st...
