Also, no one has mentioned the room you are recording in. This could also be contributing to the distortion, for instance, if you have (say) a 15dB peak at a particular frequency because of the room, it can cause distortion. I think you would have to be pretty far off mic for the room to have this ...

I really like my Fathead for fiddle, guitar amps, acoustic guitar, and drum OHs. It is great to have a ribbon to get open accurate mids while taming screachy, pick clicky, icy highs. I get tracks that add nicely to the music bed without competing with the vocal's intelligibility. I also like the rej...

If you don't care about interupting the pre-amp to fader in the Ashly then you are perfectly fine with TRS on both ends. No sonic benefit to the other set up (good mechanical contact is your only goal). I can't think of a way that you could hurt a mixer or multitrack with line level signal. If you d...

Thanks for the input. You've all got me leaning toward Sytek. As much as I would like to have a 500 series shit-to-gold converter, what I really need is more quiet hi-fi gain. My original post is more about what pre-amp set up will be most versatile on a limited budget. Questions for those who own S...

I think you are right on with the Fathead. I was very happy with how mine reduced bow squeaks and shrillness on violin. It also reduces pick clack on acoustic guitar. I'm very happy with mine. It doesn't need as much pre-amp gain as some low output ribbons. I'm guessing you will be fine with the mbo...

Thanks for the answers. rty5150 - I have a Soundcraft LX7 that I can use to boost my pre count, but space is a concern so having both consoles at mix position would be tough. Also, I'm hoping for a big jump up in sound quality. The Lx7 pres are more forgiving but I don't think of them as being super ...

Sytek Vs. 500 series Vs. SCA - help please
I'm looking to upgrade my pre-amp situation. Currently I am using the 8 pres in my Yamaha 02R desk. They are fine(if boring) for louder sources/hotter mics but they get noisy pretty quick at gain settings above 1 or 2 o'clock. I also need more channels. 4 more would be nice but I could make do with ...

... my Apex 185s ... If I'm using them to record the kick drum and bass rather than the room, I should have them in cardioid rather than omni, amirite? It will make isolation much easier. However, try them with the omnis also if you can. You never know, you might get lucky with placement and like t...

A few things you might try: Rather than using the Apex 185s as room mics, try one on the kick and one on the bass amp. They have the best low ferq. response (down to 30hz) of the mics you listed. The Omnis will also have a smoother response than the cheap dyn. Cardiods (shure rs25, apex 870), so you...

The mix is something like 100% condenser and 75% dynamic, Let's assume he meant one fader at 100% of it's throw (all the way up, or at 0db) and the other up 3/4 or 75% (maybe -6db or -10db?). It seems better to describe a recipe like this in loose, unscientific terms because he was talking about a ...
