No Gibson lefites

This is a completely ignorant question, but, why not just flip the bridge, get a new nut, and drill new strap holes? It would put the controls on the top, but on some guitars they wouldn't be in the way. I have set guitars up for left handed customers. An SG or 335 works out pretty well. Seems like...

No more lefty Gibsons

Just for fun I googled a bit and found this: http://www.adirondackguitar.com/lefty/lh_electrics.htm Note that Heritage makes left-handed guitars. Heritage guitars are made in the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, not saying they are just like old Gibsons but a good Heritage is a fine guitar. They mak...

Re: Ultimate Strat Pickups

And YES, EMGs do sound better when you back them off of the strings. Better still when you take them out of my guitar and put them in yours! Well send them on along then! I only use flatwounds on my Hoyer, been thinking about trying them on my Deacon 12 string tho. This is part of the fun of the gui...

Cool New Stuff

Waiting for an SM7 to arrive. Snagged a Larrivee solid body bass with ebony fretboard, EMG pickups and Schaller hardware at the pawn shop for $120 out the door 2 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago picked up a Roland Micro Cube for $40. Am interested to see how quiet it is when run on batteries, it is a nice sou...

guitar

Do they always break in the same place? Usually that would be at the saddle. Might try doing some careful rounding and smoothing with needle files and fine sandpaper - 400-600 grit. Corrosive sweat will take it's toll as well, not sure what to do about that. True story: At a show long ago, in a fren...

Ultimate Strat pickups

It seems that when things vibrate together for years and years, they just start to 'become one' a little bit more. There is a 'wholeness' to many of the best vintage guitars I've played. That is definitely true. I agree, although I think big part of it is that the wood has completely dried and the ...

Ultimate Strat Pickups

If you're not already bored with the topic, or haven't made your choice yet, here's two more cents for ya'. I'm a little but of a tone snob, and I wholeheartedly recommend either Seymour Duncan Alnico IIs, or Fender Texas Specials. I use both in different guitars, as well a Lindy Fralins in another...

Hammond M2 speaker hookup

I had a Hammond M1 that had a field coil speaker in it. It is 1000 miles away so I can't document the wiring but I am going to take a wild guess that the field coil is going to be higher impedance than the voice coil of the speaker. So, hook the wires from the output transformer of the amplifier - i...

blown speakers

Truly blown speakers make only silence. Some drivers will put up quite a fight before dying though. I would create the situation where the bad sound exists, put in earplugs and get really close to make sure which driver is distorting. If it is the tweeter, very gently place your finger on the dust c...

Hammond M2 speaker wiring

First of all, the M2 does not use a field-coil speaker like the M1 - correct? Depending on the reverb installation you may need two speakers. Many Hammonds had a second amplifier for the reverb. You need to make sure the output transformers of both amplifiers see a load (speaker) or they will overhe...

Poll on intolerable boredom vs. fresh lively music

Perhaps if the music was on the same level as say Beethoven and not just another fun little bit of pablum pop music for the masses, it would make sense to care about all the tedious little parts that got put in to make the recording interesting. I recently watched the Eagle's on DVD and they played ...

Ultimate Strat pickups

I have used EMG active pickups for my strat and tele for years and I still love them. Model SA - the active ones. Just disobey the instructions about adjusting your pickups as close to the strings as possible, too harsh that way. Lower the pickups down and they sweeten up nicely. You can snag them o...

building a cheap reverb

It has been years but I built a reverb using springs I found at the hardware store. I punched tiny holes at the edge of the dust cap on a 4" speaker and hooked the springs through there. The speaker went to the amp and that drove the springs. I had this mounted on a board with nails in different spo...

No more Lefty Gibsons

This is a classic bean-counter move. If they get enough orders for left-handed guitars they will make them again. I am a total south-paw but play right handed - for whatever reason. Others like me include Steve Morse and Robert Fripp (not that I am saying I play like them!). I used to do guitar repa...

Direct guitar tone

I like my Tonelab as well, it uses a tube as an output amplifier instead of a preamp and this makes a big difference. Turning up the master volumes and leaving the input gain low "hurts" the tube a bit and starts to get that sweet slightly grindy clean tone of a good Fender turned just a bit too lou...
