my experience with having my work mastered by an outside ME is that it doesnt always make a huge difference.. if your rock sounds great already, that means you will be sending your ME something that they won't want to alter dramatically.. what you are doing as far as "simulating" mastering compressi...

yeah i think backing up a little on the loud parts is usually good, gets a little more room in there... i think not oversinging is a big part. a lot of inexperienced singers seem to always push really hard so it sounds "like they're really rocking" but IMO it usually makes their voices sound strain...

Totally... the Ohio River Basin is the next big scene (in the future it will be referred to as O.R.B., and will be bigger than whatever happened in Seatle 14 years ago) :) yup.. we should all just pool our money and build one huge mega studio for recording all 5 bands that exist in the O.R.B. we'll...

What about the RCA Really Nice Compressor ive heard theyre pretty good. i swear by the RNC's.. i have four and they are great for everything.. and used in "really nice" mode, they are great for mastering compression.. definitely not a "vintage" sound though.. they add very little coloration I use R...

what ive found as far as "good" vocal technique when recording is having a singer who understands their proximity to the microphone and what happens when it changes.. im also a singer and i know my mics and how they respond when i pull away from them, push in on them, etc... i kind of envision a sin...

Re: you
you guys are gonna make me cry ;) ive been playing drums a long time, and i can honestly say that if i had to track the actual drums separate from the cymbals, my performance would sound off. theres a subtlety of playing that i think you would lose doing it separate... my 2 cents :) the technique i...

i really love the sans amp bass driver for clarity into a trident pre.. i generally split the signal coming from the driver's parallel out into a fuzz pedal (bluebeard of big muff) and into an ampeg svt4 pro.. i then go direct out of the ampeg into another channel of trident.. when i mix, the sans a...

being your first time, i would consider only having one guitar (or bass) play along with the drummer while you track the drums.. face the amp toward a corner or the couch.. this way you can go back and overdub the instruments and have better isolation on the drums themselves.. it's frustrating when ...

Welcome Lion Audio... The first thing you HAVE to do is except that there will always be some bleed. There are some cool things to try to minimize this. These being mic-positioning & pick-up pattern usage. For example, here is a clip of my band's current method of miking drums: (A little dry/raw st...

first post.. drum mic question
this is my first post on here, so hello to my fellow engineers.. i'm entirely self-taught in the engineering dept. and was wondering what advice any of you can give on reducing bleed on close mic'd drums.. i have a problem at times especially with toms in having too much cymbal bleed, and also havin...
