Yup. That tape needs to be baked. The machine is fine. Clean it well after playing that sticky tape.

I thought that the room looked like Southern Studios in London (where they have a Raindirk). And the console shape and layout looked like the one at Southern.

Since its not Southern, I have no idea what that console is. Sorry.

I've had very good luck recording bari sax with an AT 4060 large diaphram tube mic. I've done a bunch of jazz records with Ken Vandermark using this mic on all his saxes. We try to keep it back a foot or two.

For good quality pressing, I recommend: 1. Having the lacquers or coppers cut at a dedicated mastering studio (not in-house at the pressing plant). 2. Having the metal-plating done by a dedicated plating facility like Mastercraft Metal Finishing in New Jersey (although the in-house metal plating at ...

When I've used the GJ type setup, I'm quite certain that the 2 mics are not equidistant from the snare or the bass drum. It always sounds fine to me. I just aim both mics towards the snare and position them to get the desired mix of toms and cymbals.

I thought that the 380 was a fig-8 mic, and the TG version (TGX-50, I think) was a hypercardioid with a different sound...brighter. These 2 mics look the same but sound pretty different.

Is there a TG-380?

Are you high?

Believe me, mastering engineers back in the olden times certainly were trying to get their vinyl cut louder than the other guy's vinyl cut.

The guitar player in my band plays through a 1965 Fender Bassman head into a home-made speaker cabinet. He and I built 4 speaker cabinets for our band so that they would match (2 for me and 2 for him). The cabinet construction for all 4 was done to sound good with my EV 15-inch speakers (for bass). ...

It's Albini approved, if that means anything to you... bob weston used to like 'em as overheads too. I don't think I've ever used these as overheads. They DO sound excellent on some guitar amps, bass amp (awesome on a bass amp speaker, even a 15"), and cello. I've used it on snare too, I think. bob...

By far, the best tracking studio I've ever used is in the Jamaica Plain part of Boston: Squid Hell. Best acoustics ever. API console.

I recorded the upcoming Mission of Burma album there last winter.
