Thanks all!
I know I won't be able to get the exact sound, and I wouldn't want to. But I sure love shooting for a sound I haven't done before and then do something with it I haven't done.

M. Ward's Drum Sound on "Never Had Nobody Like You"
Ok. I've been on an M. Ward kick lately and this song just pops out of the speakers/earbuds/car stereo every time. HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs7Ks3AWwOc It reminds me a lot of (and was probably an homage too the sound of) The Beatles "Revolution". HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG...

Look Ma! I recorded me some TUBA!
So, I'm working on a project for a video game designer. It's a simple online flash game and there are elephants involved, so I immediately thought: TUBA! I've never recorded tuba so I scoured the internets and my Facebook friends for advice. Here's the shootout. Which do you like best? I really like...

I'd beg to differ that his songs are silly though. I think his songs tend to be very UNsilly, so I think he balances that with some silliness in his stage performance. Check out his lyrics. Not so silly, really. :) Again, these are very subjective comments. As subjective as which mic placement is be...

Not only am I a fan of Sufjan's ("Michigan" is the album that I love the most) but I found that many of his techniques were similar to what I've done. I had an 880, upgraded to a 1680, then transferred many tracks 2 tracks at a time into ProTools. :) I smiled when I read it. And I could also relate ...

I can't NOT comment on this thread. I have been a fan since Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Something about the guitar solo in "Cut Your Hair" just hooked me. Don't know why. Not sure why it struck a chord with me, but it did. I haven't heard this new album by Malkmus, but I'm sure I'll get it soon. I d...

Goatknuckles (or Tyler, right?), First, thanks for posting your questions. Second, I wanted to hop in on this thread because A) it's really interesting B) I'm in somewhat of the same boat C) I'm learning a lot of how to DIY (or should that be "DYM"-Do It Myself)? Here's my setup/equipment: ProTools ...

I've used loops from this site on a recording or too. It says "royalty free" in the tagline:

I even messed around making loops and submitting them at one point. It's not as easy as I thought it would be...

You should burn disc-at-once, rather than track-at-once. If there's a setting for pause between tracks, anywhere in itunes preferences, set it to 0. But yeah, you're correct, you should use a real burning program. What "real program" would you suggest as an alternative? :) I actually use iTunes as ...

When I first heard The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" I was in my little Honda Civic cruising up the 15 in the hot, hot heat. That song moved me. I always seem to notice it around this time of the year, so I'm guessing it was a summer released song, and will forever by lodged in my psyche as such. I...
