Love this. I take this approach when playing guitar all the time. If I don't have anything good to play I just play the worst nonsense imaginable and it always makes me laugh and usually leads to something useful.

Re: DIY drum sample pack
Maybe drum replacement software has an elegant solution. Superior Drummer makes it easy. It can quickly take lets say your snare track and make a trigger from it, then you can do whatever you want: close snare, under snare, oh, any number of different room mics, all within their mixer, one track in...

Re: Getting motivated on your own music recording projects.
Have you considered going dawless? Naw, the computer's not the problem. There isn't any problem really, I just don't feel like spending my free time making a record. That's what I did for 20 years. Right now I'd rather spend my free time just playing for the sake of it. That said, I have done every...

Re: Snares - what’s everyone using nowadays?
What are you all doing with your acrolites tuning wise? I think acros will sound good pretty much wherever. Mine's probably around an A, generally all my snares are somewhere between a G and a B. The Pearl will go up to a C# and still sound good, the old Gretsch maybe a little lower than a G. Botto...

Re: Snares - what’s everyone using nowadays?
They're all under the bed in the guest bedroom. I actually played the drums for the first time in 5 years this past weekend, got together with some old friends for a jam. I remembered what to do! So that was nice. My favorite is a 5x14 Grover, just sounds nice all around. There's also an acrolite, a...

Re: Getting motivated on your own music recording projects.
Good topic. I picked up the guitar again at the start of the pandemic, and I play all the time now. I've written at least a dozen little ditties so far, and I come up with new stuff all the time. So that's all great. What's not great is I have basically zero interest in sitting down at the computer ...

I'm finding comfort in the thought of Garges talking Steve's ear off right now.

Re: RIP Steve Albini
from the first snare hit you knew immediately if he recorded it. I posted this on the Electrical board earlier: Many years ago, my girlfriend picks me up in her car. She's listening to The Wedding Present. I've never heard them. 20 seconds in I say "damn, this sounds really good!" 10 seconds after ...

One of my heroes. 61 is way too young. This is really sad.
RIP Steve.

Re: Size Matters!
I've seen some people stack their screens vertically to better fit the space. I have three monitors arranged vertically, big one (I think it's 55") in the middle, smaller guys top and bottom. I don't have a desk, they're all on the wall: https://i.imgur.com/dR5DH1j.jpg After years of only having on...

that one forum, ARS or something? As far as I can tell, it Is nothing but that Yeah, I think it's Audio Science Review. The comments in the thread were all so smug and arrogant I was tempted to sign up just to go off on them like I used to with Jeff "$35" Robinson here way back in the day. Fortunat...

Same B+W 805s I've had since 2006. They're like members of the family now. Pair of HSU subs and Hypex amps. I saw a 'review' of the 805s on some site where they're all about the test results and measurements, and the people were HORRIFIED that the 805s don't measure perfectly flat. The best comment ...

Re: widening stereo sources in a mix
So sometimes you end up with stereo tracks that were really mono tracks (or should be mono tracks). So invert one side and see if they null? Good point. If you're cranking the width on an m/s plugin and nothing seems to change, it's likely it's just a mono source. This is a great utility plugin tha...
