Anyone know what's up with Mercenary Audio?

Does anyone know if there's something up with Mercenary Audio? I know they're an advertiser in the magazine and seem reputable, so I and placed an order with them for a DI box. That was in early April. My order got an automated response and order number but no shipping or tracking info. I've left me...

Thanks to the both of you. It confirms what I'm experiencing. I like the features in X1, and some of the plug-ins, particularly the multichannel compressor, are terriffic. But it looks like I'll be adding a new DAW.

Sonar stability issues?

I could use some perspective about DAW stability. I'm running Sonar X1 producer 64-bit on a PC (Windows 7). I've always used cakewalk/sonar for tracking and mixing my own music. More and more I'm taking on outside projects. Each version of the program has had its stability issues - which wasn't too ...

If you're interested in ribbons the fatheads are great, but check out a pair of Nady RSM-4s. They're super cheap - less than $70 new - and are easily modded with a new tranformer. They're not as bright as more expensive ribbons but give a certain warm, compressed depth to cymbals and toms. I've had ...

Geez. You'd think the staff at the airport in Austin would be used to dealing with instruments.

Thanks, that and xanax will ease my mind somewhat.

Has anyone out there ever had a bad run-in with Officer Friendly over carry-on gear?

avoiding a cavity search

It seems to me this was covered once a while ago but I couldn't dig it up with a search so... I'm about to fly (domestic/U.S.) to a recording gig with some basic gear (basically mics, an interface, and some cables/ connectors. Everything fits into your basic hardcase, smaller than a typical carry-on...

On the low-cost, low-tech end of things, I've gotten good results using very thick books. Looks better than cinderblock.

Does anyone like the API/JDK R20 preamp?

I'm wondering what people think of it. I'm looking for a clean, solid 2-channel pre-amp for things like drum overheads. From what I've read about this one, I'm guessing it sounds pretty transparent. Is that the case? Does it's have enough gain for ribbons? For about the same price point, I'm also co...

Here's another idea... I picked up a carbon mic some time ago - basically an old analog telephone receiver mic with a 9 volt power supply. It's trashy sounding in the best way and came with a power switch on the unit, so you wouldn't have to mess with a pedal if your hands are free. And it's got ok ...

focusrite twin track - reliable?

I've come across some discouraging online comments about the Twin Track reliability after a year or two (channels frying, pots falling out, etc.). But I never fully trust user reviews on retailer's websites. It's been around for a while now. Anyone out there with reliability issues out of the range ...

interface for drums - MOTU v/ PreSonus

I'm looking for an interface mostly for recording drums. I don't currently have enough good pre-amps for a whole kit. I've been considering a MOTU 8 Pre. I have an ultralite at home and like the preamps for general applications, plus it's pretty reliable and expandable. But I keep getting distracted...
