because for me the idea of using the same recording/techniques methods each time is total drudgery That's not what is meant by learning how to maintain a standard of excellence. Many fine recordists alter the way they'll approach something, based on their experience. Working with experienced folks ...

Look to your gain staging. First doublecheck the input sensitivity setting going into the recorder. Leave lots of headroom there. It won't hurt if peaks don't go above -10 dBFS. If you still hear the distortion, it's upstream from the recorder. Lower gain settings at the preamp until you are certain...

I like the Long Tail concept, but I'm not sure it works. If you visit CD Baby there are these big bins of 20 or so top selling CDs, and they make up the majority of what is really selling. When companies like Sony get involved, it's to skim off these acts. The rest of the shelves have thousands of ...

These types of "misunderstandings" are why writing was invented. So many of these happenings take place between "friends". The OP wanted to be treated professionally, and the other party was seeking professional assistance. The mutual intentions of such a relationship are codified by a contract, eve...

Well, that's fine - but with all due respect, virtually none of this is addressing my questions. I'm not looking for treatment suggestions. I'm trying to get an idea of the interaction of corners with the space: for example, if the corner acts like a horn, does widening it lessen the focus, or chan...

Re: Um, about your DI's

My personal favorite is my Evil Twin from Eclair engineering. Available only directly from them. Don't bother to look into it if $500 already sounds like too much for a really good DI. Others I use here include the DI inputs of a Great River MP2-MH, and an Alembic F2-B preamp. All this comes down to...

Re: I'm curious to know if anyone out there is...

I'm curious to know if anyone out there is anti-digital, analog-only to a fault. Like, the thought of it makes your heart sink and your stomach turn to see a clipped waveform, or to see one period. But they don't mind that things may take longer, or have things be more difficult. I've seen plenty o...

Radiostar looks interesting, but this is a young artist with a limited budget and right now I think she'd find that place intimidating, even if she could afford it.

Thanks for the pointer.

At the AES fest in SF in 2006 a Studer rep told me they still had brand new 827's in stock for about $21K plus shipping. So anyone wishing to wax nostalgic could call Studer and see if they still have 'em.

Recording Facilities in Arcata/Eureka/Humboldt California re

I'm working with an artist on her first product. We've tracked the simple all-acoustic songs at my place. I'm now looking for a studio in Arcata/Eureka/Humboldt county area of northern California to track the songs that will include bass and drums, because the preferred bass player lives in Arcata, ...
