What to buy? SMPTE sync between PT LE and tape
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere -- I searched and came up dry. I would like to use SMTPE sync between my PT LE setup and my Otari 1/2" 8-track. It seems one of the MOTU Timepieces should do this, but it's not clear to me whether I would need to go with the Digital Timepiece or the MIDI Timepi...

Re: This forum quoted in an ad...
This is a bad thing, I think. Any idiot can post something here (not insinuating Joel is an idiot by any stretch, though), and someone can pull that out and say "Tape Op Board says...". I agree, but is it any different than brochures with meaningless (probably) fictional quotes like "I loved it!" -...

Re: dumping tape to tools
...why not just track the drums on 2 tracks to begin with? Good question! Since the drums will end up either mono or stereo, why not track 'em that way? I guess I'd have to say because I want to have more control over the drum mix than I could get with 2 tracks. Another option, you could just print...

Re: dumping tape to tools
I'm dredging up a really old post. There are some really great posts on SMPTE, dumping from tape to PT, etc. I feel smarter already. I wanted to bounce this idea of ya'll, and see if this seems like it would work: After recording drums and bass to 8-track, I want to dump that stuff into PT. But rath...

Re: elliot smith coda
I picked up From a Basement... only having heard Either/Or, so I wasn't sure what to expect-- although I was kinda figuring on a mellow acoustic-y record. I was very pleasantly surprised when the opener kicked in with its swirly guitars and vocals. It's very rare for me to like an album on first lis...

WTB: Otari MX-5050 1/2" 8-track - in Oregon/Washington
I'm seeking an Otari MX-5050 1/2" 8-track (with remote?) in excellent working condition, although I would consider it even if it needs some work and money put into it. Depends on what it needs, I guess. :) I'd prefer to pick it up along the I-5 corridor in Oregon/Washington to avoid a potential ship...

Besides, Walter Sear says it all sounds like shit anyway, so who cares? ![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Re: any tips on soundproofing a basement?
You might try creating a "box within a box" in your basement. This may reduce the amount of sound that makes it outside since you'd have just air between the walls of your "box" and the outside walls of your house. In the first iteration of my basement studio I screwed large metal hooks into the joi...

Re: And you thought Walter Sear made you cry..
It's funny this thread got started, I was just reading the Walter Sear thing this morning whilst taking a shit... What a coincidence! I found the Sear article alternately interesting and eyeroll-worthy, and I'm glad Tape Op included it. I appreciate Walter's viewpoint and his desire to maintain qua...

Well, that just sucks! Although working for a large software/hardware manufacturer, you'd think I'd know better.

Pro Tools 6.4 upgrade problems
I tried to upgrade from PT LE 6.1 to 6.4 (Digi 001) on my XP machine and it hangs during the driver portion of the install. This is the first time I've had any trouble with PT on this computer, and I've been upgrading with each successive version since 5.1. The only thing that I can think of that ha...

Re: Getting Pro Tools to REMEMBER being maximized? (2 monito
Interesting. That does work pretty well. Now why couldn't Digidesign have just programmed that into PT in the first place? It's just saving some screen dimensions, for cryin' out loud! I'll give it a try for a while. It's still a few extra mouse clicks each time I open PT or a session, but at least ...
