Re: Issues with Studiomaster mixer

I think a new transformer would be a good start.

I've noticed the noise in the main channel out's only comes on after the mixer has been running for a while. Maybe heat related?

Issues with Studiomaster mixer

Hi I've got an old Studiomaster Mixdown Gold 16-8-2 mixer. It has a couple issues I'd like to sort out. 1.) There is an intermittent humming in the main channel outputs. It comes and goes but it isn't present in any of direct outputs or bus sends. 2.) There is a quite loud buzzing sound coming from ...

You can put a resistor between the 50k wiper and the capacitors. That will lower the Q but will also lower the max boost/cut available. It wont effect the center frequency though. Might be worth a try if the amount of boost/cut is pretty high.

There are opto compressors that do have attack and release controls though. Like the Avalon VT-747s (http://www.avalondesign.com/vt747sp.html) we are not talking about having a knob to vary the attack, we are talking about changing the overall range that the attack control normally has Yes I know t...

Of course it probably wont work so easily for an optical compressor. The attack/release time constants for an opto compressor are almost always due to the response of the photoresistors. Example: in the LA-2/3, the audio signal is used to directly drive the electroluminescent panel, so the "time co...

They are pretty popular in Fuzz pedals for guitars because of the way they distort. It's probably the same reason they are not popular in many other applications. I've seen Germanium diodes in the rectifiers driving lamps in optical compressors. I guess the voltage/current curve makes the lamp come ...

SM Pro makes a similar gizmo called a Mic Thing. http://www.smproaudio.com/index.php?opt ... view&id=47

They look easy enough to DIY.

I like Harlans tip about recording in a car because of the good acoustics.
