Am I the only one here who is not impressed with the sound of LAME MP3s? I guess for maximum size efficiency to audio quality I can see it, but iTunes at 192 sounds better than LAME to me, and much better at higher rates. LAME just destroys anything resembling a stereo field and the LPF sounds like ...

Not sure I understand exactly what you're trying to do. Do you want to slow everything down, overdub with the slowed tracks and then speed it all back up, thereby having the overdubs be up an octave? I use Serato Pitch and Time for pretty much all my, uh, pitch and time stuff. The varispeed mode is ...

Roy and Chris's technique works for me about 70% of the time and is my first option, RefD's works 90% of the time when option 1 fails. As a last possible resort just have the player punch in that note on tracking day. However, that is a last resort as it usually takes less billable time and sounds m...

I like the idea of re-recording the drums in a good sized room. I'd tried to find out a bit about the Tom Waits room in Prairie Sun, but there's not a lot of spec around that I could see. The point is not really that room in particular. The Waits Room is in studio C at Prairie Sun, which is more or...

I don't want to let you handle a $7000 microphone until I see how you treat my mop. How do you approach your duties - do you take pride in your work? Show up on time? Show a good work ethic? Do you bring the change back when you get the coffee? Did you bring back the right things (i.e. can you foll...

The crude brickwall cut causes the "mp3 sound". That sound is the absence of frequencies digitally removed above the specific frequency, and the rounded off leftovers or "artifacts" in their place That's what I'm talking about. Thank you for that post. When I have some time I'll do some listening w...

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you're asking about how to get better results converting your masters to MP3? I share your question. I feel like my MP3's are not up to snuff. This is a very relevant question. The field of mastering changed somewhat dramatically when the delivery format ...

It's a difficult approach. Maybe like a good actor playing a bad actor? Indeed. Very hard not to come across as a bad actor. A blend of "hi-fi" and "lo_fi" (with Bono's voice at one end of the spectrum and Tom Waits' voice circa Mule Variations at the other) can be a fun approach. I usually find I ...

Have you tried micing the other side? I would think a D112 right up on the beater side might be worth a listen. Midi trigger to augment it would be the best option for making a sound other thank suitcase. If you start trying to create frequencies from thin air in a live context there's this thing ca...
