Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing
I guess the simplest way to ask this would be, does increasing input gain add more noise than turning the faders up or is it basically the same? It is not the same, although when done in small amounts you won't be able to tell the difference. In any basic mixer, the signal goes through several gain...

Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing
You can always turn down the inputs to the mixer, or the outputs from the tape machine, if possible.

Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing
Hi, Hopefully your gain going into the tape machine was good, so you have a good signal-to-noise ratio (the least amount of hiss / noise as compared to the actual signal you recorded.) For mixing, you just need to set the playback of your tape machine to unity, meaning your test tones are at zero on...

Re: Creating depth in mixes
I wrote about that on here ages ago... maybe you can find it. LOL.
How to get depth in a Mono speaker, which then translates into Stereo a lot faster. Auratones were great for that purpose.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Bought a new 2023 Macbook Pro Silicon M2Pro chipset laptop. Our oldest is going to University this Fall, so he gets my trusty 2019 Macbook Pro Intel i9, which has served me so fantastically well. It took two days to port over all the apps I own into this new laptop LOL, not for the faint of heart. I...

Re: (Demonic) Pencil Tool in Protools
The pencil tool is a DESTRUCTIVE editing tool. It directly writes into the wave file. It is recommended that you first make a COPY of the audio file you are about to edit with the pencil tool. And keep the original intact. It's right in the reference manual: page 648 "Waveform Repair with the Pencil...

Getting motivated on your own music recording projects.
Hey all, I am finally, after years of saying so, making my own stuff. Mainly songs from the year I was born, covers of them. To get the part of the "making a new song" pressure out of the way. I am still finding it hard to be motivated to get some of it done. I have never really been "on the other s...

Re: dynamic mics and speaker coils?
Well, to have an interaction between the magnets, basically only the speaker magnet would be the one attracting the microphone body. It would also likely stop or greatly slow down the voice coil inside the mic or the ribbon mic could be destroyed. You could always try some experiments, knowing full ...

Truly sad. He was a wonderful guy and a great engineer. Loved reading stuff on his website and elsewhere. He will be sorely missed.

Re: Mono Auratone - who knew??
But curious did you come up using NS-10s? Are these close enough to the original to just get to work? I had used them to mix quite a few records, and yes, these sound the same. I did not just get back to works though, since I was sued to other speakers for years. I took about a week listening to pr...

Re: Mono Auratone - who knew??
Yep, it's actually a very old studio trick going back to the heady days of Radio dominance, the 1970s. I still have a pair here somewhere, but am not sure if they work anymore. I am enjoying my CLA-10a's too much to go looking for the Auratones LOL.

Re: Logic Pro 11 announced - Free upgrade for current users
There seems to be no date set, and I already have the "latest" version they have, which is 10.8.1. Gotta love Apple's mysterious ways... But wait! I found the press release: May 13th is the release date. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/05/logic-pro-takes-music-making-to-the-next-level-with-new-a...
