Are you a tube nerd? If so, there are a number of other music places near this place, plus a zillion venues/bars/restaurants etc. And the East River Ferry goes there, which is a cheap quick, sightseeing ride if you time it right. look up: Main Drag Music, Southside Guitars (gear) Earwax, Academy, R...

They got a favorable review in TapeOp, but I haven't tried them.
They are inexpensive.

I think it's a cool service they offer, I'm sure there are a lot of old "unusable" mics lying around which could be converted into something useful for the right person.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/280x200q90/746/157675.jpg As you can see my $10 M267 seems to have had the AC cord removed. It works fine with batteries but I want to be able to plug it in. Is this as simple as finding two points where I can attach a 2-prong plug? Or do I need an external power su...

I recommend you start with the 4-track. A 4-track and 57 will take you far, my son. As far as the second mic, just use anything you can get your hands on. You can always get a cheap little external phantom power supply if you need it. You're the second person to post that Pega Monstro track, I had n...

I think the point is that listeners at home are not staring at the speakers, straining to identify flaws. Nobody listens to music like that. If you're reading (or devoting attention elsewhere) as the music plays, any problematic aspect (too loud/soft or out of place) will reach out and tap you on th...

This guy made a record with an 8-track cassette deck and it does not sound "crappy" at all. No offense but I think taking the plunge on a 2" machine at this stage is not the right move. It's a little like "I'm interested in learning how to fly, should I buy a 747?" Of course, if you have too much c...

I don't think ADAT "counts" as tape. It uses tape as a storage medium for a digitally encoded signal. It is apparently universally hated these days, with all of the drawbacks of both analog AND digital, combined. I would avoid this. The MX-2424 is a hard disk recorder, there's no tape involved anywh...

Vintage Hi Fi will be the very next rage. There's a sort of all-purpose-music-tech-computer place near me in Brooklyn that has started offering re-furbed '70s solid state receivers to the earbud generation. They have to point out that you can indeed plug your iPod/Pad/computer into these devices. I...

Since money was and is tight, I use a 1990s Marantz player ($10 from a yard sale)
Me too, precisely.

It even scrolls the CD text in the window, what a thrill.
