Plugging into the bottom row (input) will break the connection from the top row (output) of any kind of normal--full or half. It's if a break happens when plugged into the top row that defines the normal. Full normal breaks, half-normal doesn't. Most of the time all points can be half-normal, except...

No problem. I'm kinda on a patchbay consulting roll lately. In my perfect world, everything is normaled to something. It's probably a mild form of OCD... I didn't consider that a some of your gear uses the unbalanced SND/RTN thing on same TRS (your aux's, some of your compressors). That means you ca...

Re: Beginner Patchbay Q
I would solder the pre outputs into patchbay node 1 and 2's top and then solder inputs 1 through 8 of my portastudio into the bottom of patchbay 11-18. I'd use a connector to assign a preamp channel to a record channel. I would solder the four inserts to the top of nodes 19-22. I'd solder the input...

Your language is too negative. This is the most frequent way I see smart, humble people sabotage themselves, across every field. You have to get out of this intern-unpaid-I'm-a-loser mindset, because no one wants to hire someone when this is how they present themselves: I have basically no studio ex...

FA: Tascam ADAT format converter - NYC
I'm divesting myself of a working Tascam ADAT format converter. TDIF-1 IF-TAD. This device is no longer produced. If you have a need for this it's pretty handy! Happy to answer questions. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=150321696500 http://www.tascam.com/...

The SSL Duality Install Guide lists measurements, which are fairly standard. I'd check other manufacturers guides and they'll be in the same ballpark.

Charlotte beering or something, Mon 1/7, Tues 1/8
I'm going to be in downtown Charlotte kicking around Mon and Tues night, installing an SSL by day (I'm an SSL engineer based in NYC). If anyone would like to get together later Monday (7pm+) or Tuesday and show me a local joint, talk shop, whatever, I'd be into that. Restaurant recommendations of th...

I think Misery... is mastered way too hot to the detriment of what sounds like fine mixes underneath. In an Expression... is my favorite and favorite sounding of theirs, very clean and crisp, everything has it's own place. It really punches. Misery... just stepped into a little too much of a "commer...

Technical vs Creative
That said, once you level the playing field for competence, you'll find that to a surprising degree, quality of work is not the most important factor in deciding income level among regular audio professionals. It might help get you in a door somewhere, but the guys I know that are doing wel...

I would not put too much stock in what "Columbia College or the Chicago recording scene have to offer." Go to a university (4 year), get a degree in anything, and continue your recording passion. You'll be more valuable anywhere with this combination. Use your time in school, which is basically time...
