DBX 150x Price Range
I have been browsing eBay looking at prices for DBX 150x Noise Reduction units and I'm a little confused at the range in prices I see. I see them going on Buy It Now from $40 to $250. It seems as though they are comparable in quality. Does anyone know why this may be? Anyone know what a decent price...

I inherited a TEAC 4 Track a few months ago and started messing around with it. I recorded a simple acoustic tune with a buddy and did a mix down through my Yamaha board. For the first time since I've been recording I actually like the sound. It's not perfect, or mind blowing but I like listening to...

Gregg thank you for the suggestions. There's some good stuff in there. I would be interested in seeing your syllabus maybe you could PM me and email it to me. I never would have thought about the idea of a radio station so I might look into that. For the rap portion of the class my plan was to use t...

History of Rock/Rap Class
Hello Tape Op folk. By profession I am a history teacher and my school let me teach a History of Rock/Rap class this year. It's going well so far. I asked my students what they'd be interested in learning more about and one thing that came up was the recording process. I thought this community might...

I have not done that and I don't believe it's been done to this machine in quite some time. I have read about the need to do this but I don't know how. Do you know of a good resource that explains this process. I know that I can really mess things up if I do it wrong but it seems like something I sh...

Swapping cables was the first thing I tried, it was not a bad cable. I tried to reproduce the buzz this evening and I couldn't get it to buzz again. Intermittent problems are the worst. I do have a refrigerator and a freezer next to my recording desk, could one or both of those cause interference? I...

Noise on a channel on my tape machine.
I just got a TEAC 3340 4 track. I have a problem with channel 1. When I record there is a buzz on the track after I'm done. When I'm not recording the channel is noisy but it's more of a hiss and not a buzz. Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it too expensive to repair? I am new to the tape world so a...

The article on Albini was pretty enlightening. I didn't know much about him beforehand, other than the fact that he had a reputation. A reputation as a disturber of the peace, but in a cool punk rock way. Afterwards I listened to Surfer Rosa and In Utero. I can definitely here a common thread, very ...

Thank you for your lengthy reply Nick. The arrangements will be for acoustic guitar and mandolin. Two voices, myself and a female. The goal of the recording is to present to music as cleanly as possible. I'd like to do live recording, with few if no overdubs. I might try recording to a metronome jus...

You're right Nick, it's not ready. We're working on arrangement right now, and I've never recorded songs like this. So I was looking for some constructive ideas on mic placement, eq, compression, things like that. I've read quite a bit on recording this type of music but this was my first shot at do...

New Bluegrassy Track
Hello, I would like some constructive criticism of a recording I did today. It's a bluegrass-ish song with acoustic guitar and mandolin. Just me and a friend. I recorded it with an AT 4033/4040 set up about 5 feet in front of us at the same height. Not much eq and some reverb and a limiter on the ma...

A friend of mine had a "mic" that was a headphone speaker duct taped to the inside of a plastic cup. The 1/8" went to 1/4" then to a practice amp. It sounded like crap but in a kind of cool way. Is that a DIY dynamic mic? I know it's not, I'm just kidding. Reading this thread reminded me of ol' "Cup...
