Room mic technique

I was visiting a studio recently and the engineer was doing something with the room mic that sounded great. He was compressing the room mic heavily and gating it, keying the gate from the snare. It sounded great, very explosive. But do you think gating it during mixing would be very different? I'd b...

Getting more signal on the VUs

Hello. I was wondering if anyone would be able to suggest something for getting more signal, most specifically on my snare track, to tape. I use an analog machine with VU meters. It seems like in order to not have the peak light come on, the signal is really low. Maybe a compressor/limiter setting (...
