My suggestion would be to use whatever pedal you end up picking plugged into a keyboard amp or perhaps a small mixer into a powered monitor speaker. Use this set up to rehearse with your band and get the balance of all the instruments and your voice so you can hear all things at their optimum levels...

Thanks for the more encouraging vision. What genre(s) are we talking here? the band i play in is psychedelic rock with some electronic influence. other artists that i know fit into the area of the industry i described are: rock and it's many offshoots, electronic, hip hop, eastern european folk mus...

DrummerMan wrote: I actually kind of like Jeff's concept, in a "wouldn't it be nice" or "can't we all just get along" kind of way. It seems that his idea would at least take the infrastructure and money that's left in the major labels and put it to some good... In theory. It's like if a country ove...

I'm pretty sure there's an in between solution, and the reason I'm pretty sure is because I make my living from it. I play as a musician in the touring band of an artist signed to a medium sized indie label, putting out records regularly. We play small to medium sized clubs and festivals around the ...

You may have one already, but if you don't - a MIDI keyboard controller. This would cost you only a small fraction of your budget (esp via Ebay) and coupled with the numerous free or software instruments available in VST will open up a world of some incredible sound. From the sounds of your project ...

I just thought I'd chime in with a couple of examples of sax > effects pedals used to excellent effect Sabu Martinez and Sahib Shihab - Winds and Skins - particularly the track 'Distorted Sioux Indian' http://www.soundsoftheuniverse.com/releases/?id=14029 and Faust - BBC Sessions - particularly the ...

Really sage advice from all three posters... thank you! A very good point that I I'm at an advantage with there being a few available to pick the best conditioned one. I think I might be able to get a relatively good deal on it too cause it seems like dude has not been able to shift them too quickly...

Space Echo Check-up?
I have always wanted a Roland Space Echo. There are 3 of them sitting collecting dust in a vintage guitar shop in my town. There are two 201s and one 301. The owner of the shop claims they are all in 'working' condition, but that none of them have tapes in them, so they can't be tested. Being the ke...

My first instinct would be to record with more headroom for the vocals. Try and get your guitars sounding like they're destroying the universe at several db's fewer than 0dBvu. Then record your quiet vocals at their ideal gain and turn them up in the mix so that they're suitably audible. Obviously y...

And from me: Yes, Totally Illegal. This is some of the only unreleased material known by Nina Simone. I cant believe I was the person that got to mix it! Also, this stuff is incredibly valuable and no I can not post anything, obviously. I dont own any of it. That must be a real treat. Do the drums ...

I know this thread is kind of old now, but I just wanted to chime and say that I'm glad this thread exists. I'm going to concur that the drummer is of primary importance, but it seems like from listening to your myspace that your drummer is already playing in the right direction. We picked up some r...

Hey, no slight intended to the folks who answered me on the Gear board, it was valuable information you gave, I just wanted to see if I could fish out some more guesses over here in mad scientist world. Sending any level through the box does decrease it's volume greatly, yes. Because there is no mar...

Mystery Ampex box ... what is it? What can one do with it?
Sorry to double post, but I thought maybe after getting not too much info on the 'Gear Talk' board, the ubertechs in here might have a thing or two to say... see below. I have little electrical engineering skills so an schematic is out of the question I'm afraid. Here is what I can tell I think is going on on the box from looking at it Mono iack wired to dual gang pot, resistors also wired to pot, jack lead also seemingly wired to pot. Is there a better way I can g...
