Apogee Mini-Me, non USB version. I got one when the price on it dropped earlier this year, and it's a pretty solid upgrade, good preamps, spdif and AES/EBU, and you get a good wordclock for the money. It's now discontinuted and starting to get scarse, but can still be found for around for about 800$...

Re: double mics on podiums - a la bush press conference - ho
doesn't really apply I suppose, but I do remember a sm57 being broken in half (through the metal casing) at a concert venue I used to work at. The band finished the set holding the mic together with both hands. Never seen anything like it. Thinking it maybe hit the ceiling when the crowd started 'wa...

Re: distortion pedals
It seems he really wants a pedal that takes his current overdrive and make it different somehow. My first thought was a Z-Vex Machine, as it "cuts through basic overdrive" like a chainsaw would cut through mama's apple pie - in mr Vex's words this pedal "basically sounds horrible. It's primary purpo...

Re: the one mic you want most
Yeah, let's assume that we don't say that we want the most expensive mic man can buy, knowing that we'd just re-sell it and buy a bunch of other things. In any case, I've been thinking about this recently. The things I feel like I'm missing the most are a top-tier dynamic (which is not really necess...

Re: analog -> digital :(
a drop like that might be a formatting issue i.e. you recorded it at 48 khz and are playing it back at 44 khz. aside from that? the next most logical thing is tape slowdown, and I think you'd know if that was the case.
A/D conversion doesn't really do that. Seriously.

Re: where to go in atlanta
Here's what I know, though I'd love to hear a few more voices chime in. My favorite places in atlanta to look for used gear are the used room at Atlanta Pro Audio (just across the highway from the guitar center near North Druid Hills, sorta), Dirt Cheap Music and Atlanta Vintage Guitars (which are b...

Re: bands that make you want to vomit...
Actually, the death metal band Grave always makes me want to vomit (particulary bits of their first album), but that's the intended effect, and I rather appreciate it. Most slow death metal works well enough.

Re: Variable power to effects?
I did once undervolt a crappy compressor I got (I think it was a DOD milk box, though I could be wrong, and it might have sounded better on guitar than my bass), and I got some sorta interesting (though not particulary useful) distortion out of it (re: second rate fuzz). I used a multi voltage Radio...

Re: great new ROLAND product! hahaha
I want one. Specifically the FR-5, as I could care less about the internal speaker rig. also weigs 5.5 lbs less. But then again, I'm on a buying hiatus (excepting perhaps odd looking cheap things at garage sales) until I do something with the junk I got. Of course, I also want a midi theremin. But t...

Re: Metal Distortion out of a Marshall?
Has anyone considered getting their metalzone pedal modded? both Analogman and Robert Keeley do MT-2 mods that get rid of a lot of the noise. Of course, it may only help a bit insofar as tone suck, but if you people have them lying around and are willing to give it a shot, it could be interesting.

Re: MOTU 896 latency
this probably belongs in the *&^% computer forum.
That said, you can either 1) RTFM for the 896 (I have one, and it's in there) 2) look for the motu control panel, as that's where that particular control should be. Or at least, that's where that control is on the pc side.

Re: Live Sound for a band that usually plays parties and stu
bloody heck, it's all so situational. I mean, the odds of sounding good are slim if you're set up in a small room with concrete walls/tile floor, on the ground the same as the audience. In general though, it's harder to balance loud, cymbals can cause havoc depending on the room, and it helps a lot ...

Re: Micing Technique, or bit depth???
sweet. anyhow, a brief addenum to the nyquist theory breakdown that chocolatechickenpotpie posted. this is largely paraphrased from Bob Katz's excellent "mastering audio". In theory, cd's are a nearly perfect audio recording format. In reality it's limited by our inablilty to create a digital or ana...

would a pop shield help? I don't know if they'll stop the air if it's always pushing like that, but it might reduce it to a manageable level.

Re: Fattening up guitar tracks whilst retaining phase goodne
Another possibility would be to record three parts (I know, it's overkill) and have them hard left/hard right/center and basically adjust until the stereo width is appropiate. You could also vary this by changing the tone between the left/right tracks and the center track. since low frequency inform...
