Thanks everyone for all the feedback and advice. I ended up going w/ the Blumlein pair and no OH. It just represented the kit so well and I was fine with the cymbals feeling slightly diffuse (this drummer can self balance, which helps). I did eventually move the under snare mic to the hi hat (and I ...

Blumlein on drums?
Hey I'm recording a drummer in a basement tonight. It's approximately a 50' by 15' space with 7' ceilings and vinyl tile on cement floor. The end of the room that we'll be using is fairly dead, and the other end is pretty live. The room doesn't sound great, but it also doesn't sound bad, exactly. I'...

WTB: dead Apex 460 (or similar)
Does anyone have a dead Apex 460 (or similar) and PSU taking up space in their junk drawer that they'd like taken off their hands?
I'd pay shipping and kick in a few bucks for your trouble.

I thought that was how most stereo compressors worked, unless there was a "amount of stereo linking" control, such as on the api 2500 stereo compressor. Am I wrong about this? No, you're not wrong. If you don't sum the sidechain on the 2 buss comp, then your stereo image can become unstable because...

Alright, I spent some more time with it, and have a better description of the problem. At low levels (say, below 4) it's fine. I cranked it up to about 6 or 7 and it sounded great for about 5 seconds, and then sounded like it had an asthma attack. Not so much sag, as totally running out of air and t...

Since I had to look up "bleeder resistor", I'm going to say that I'm probably not equipped to *safely* put a meter on B+. I can follow a schematic, though. Assuming I did avoid the deadly electricities, I'm looking at the voltage coming off the 5Y3GT? (in the schematic it's 355v) http://www.ampwares...

I have a '65 BF Vibro Champ that needs a little help. It sounds alright, if a little bass light, at lower volumes, but when I dig in, especially louder, it just *folds*. It's like once you run out of headroom, instead of clipping it sounds like it's got a really poorly set compressor that sucks out ...

Just acquired a Shinybox 46u, the newest model w/ the custom wound transformer. I've so far tried it on bass, acoustic guitar and male voice, through both a Great River ME-1NV and a Duet. It's really smooth sounding, with a midrange that can really only be described as "creamy." The highs don't go i...
