tarblackvomit's on the money, I've seen a few threads with people going nuts about the Tapehead plugin. There are other tape saturation plugins that can help, and are free. Some are compressors that when you "drive" them are supposed to behave like analog compressors, which can help. Others are just...

When I record myself I'm tracking all instruments separate - I'd kill for some nice guitar bleed in my drum mics! I wonder if I should fake it and play back guitar while I'm tracking drums (I also wonder if that's maybe not as ridiculous as I was intending it to be..)

How do you describe guitar sounds?

I've always thought it was interesting and often funny how people try to describe an electric guitar sound verbally. I'd love to make a list/poster of a full spectrum from (possibly) sparky clean to sludge, and everything in between. Maybe even split it up because of various types of effects and wha...

I'd say go guitar> pod > computer. I used Garageband on my Macbook Pro for about a year. I never had a pod, but it seems like it could be nice. I did guitar>normal 1/4" guitar cable > 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor > mic input. Using monitoring from Garageband itself either through headphones or by using the ...

I should've mentioned that when I said I uninstalled and reinstalled it, I installed the driver that's up on their site. The only have a Windows/Vista one, a Mac one, and an open beta one. I did the Windows one as that's what I'm on, and it's the same as before - I don't know that this has even been...

I forgot about the v67, I've never used one myself but I have heard endless great reviews about that mic. The 4000 seems to get good reviews as well but isn't as well-known since it's only sold a couple places.

I've got a few cheap mics, one of which is the MXL 4000 (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-4000-MultiPattern-FET-Studio-Condenser-Mic?sku=270624). It's no 414, but for a very cheap multi-pattern mic, it's not too shabby. I get a surprisingly good acoustic guitar sound with the mic in ...

Great idea! Done and done. I tried recording into Cubase by plugging an SM57> XLR> XLR-1/4" adaptor> 1/4"-1/8" adaptor> 1/8" "mic in" on the computer (phew!). I got a great level on this. Much higher than before, but not too hot, just right. I couldn't get Audacity to recognize the Firestudio Projec...

By the way, Ben, those drums sound great! The recordings in general are really nice - they have a perfect mix of good separation and gelling together. GoodFoot is my favorite on there. The drums are so detailed, it's inspiring to know those were just with the one mic!

I have to say, I keep coming back to this video! I agree with Brian, this is not a technique I would ever think to use. You did a great job! I'm thinking some of it might have to do with the style of music - I'd bet some of the bass drum is coming through in your high-end track, so it gives the kick...
