you can have cheap, fast, and good. just not in the same pre. you know the API. fast and good. not cheap. its like asking why, after driving a ferrari , you cant buy a cheap car to compete. if you'd never driven the ferrari, you might be happy with cheap. not after you drove the ferrari. there is a ...

what part of it seems to be a good platform? just asking. a $79 mic pre doesnt seem like a good paltform for much. and if buying a wall wart is too risky then any mods would be much more than $79. jensen mic transformers would be a good start. then redsign the amplifier to load the transformer corre...

if tape is shedding visibly with each pass of tape, that tape is hosed. play 1 more time as a transfer to a GOOD reel and hope its usable. many times Ive read that each pass of a tape reduces 10k by 1/8db. that sounds extreme but im sure there is loss with each pass. thats why work tapes are used. b...

a few things, dirty pots and bad jacks doesnt indicate bad caps. thin sound or bad square wave reproduction would indicate bad caps. some pots can be reconditioned and some jacks can be reconditioned. miller stephenson contact renu and lube is a good cleaner lube for the jacks. start by spraying the...

I have compiled these bits of info from wiki and others but I thought others would be just as interested:: solder 63/37: melts at 183 ?C (361.4 ?F) (eutectic: the only mixture that melts at a point, instead of over a range) 60/40: melts between 183?190 ?C (361?374 ?F) 50/50: melts between 185?215 ?C...

you can start by removing the 2 IC chips and plugging in the module. it should be silent. then after you put 2 hi reliabilty machined sockets in both positions, insert 1 NEW chip at a time and see if noise returns.
