I looked into diferent solutions like this a while back, if I'm correct, you basically want a volume knob?
After much research and a brief glance at my wallet, I bought a Behringer e602 mixer. The sound quality is acceptable, as long as you don't try to push it too much...

I'm happy with my DVD-R backups...I use a Sony DRU-500ULX Firewire Burner, and Ritek media...only complaint is time, but it's no more time consuming than burning an equivelant amount of CDs

Aquarian makes a two-ply coated head...I believe it's the Response 2 coated. Should be what you're looking for.

I preferred the PS8's over the 20/20 bas...personally, I thought they sounded a bit harsh.
Granted, the pair I "critically listened" to was a GC demo, not exactly pristine condition at that point...
