Building Sample-based VST Instruments

Hey guys - So, last night I spent some time sampling a wrapping paper tube, tuning it with scissors as I went. I put the notes into place manually for what I wanted it for, which was a massive pain in the ass. Anyway, I was thinking I should just make it into a VST instrument, since that would be mu...

That's pretty damn neat.

Hmm...I wonder what would happen if you ran a bass through it with a kick loaded as an impulse? Now I'm going to need to play with this :)

I use SIR for convo and UAD's Plate 140 when appropriate. Love both of them. NoiseVault is a great place for impulses - http://noisevault.com/nv/ There was a rumor that UA was going to be making a convo reverb for the UAD2 platform...not sure if there's any truth to it, or just speculation for what ...

Yeah, not to burst anyone's bubble, but Sweetwater can usually be talked into free shipping, so it might be better to get it from them!

I have two of those, they kick ass.

That's a good call, Roy, thanks. So, back to the mics a second - how important is it that the preamps be identical? I have one EH12AY7, which I think would be a good fit, but I only have one. :) I also have a pair of PM1000 in the mail from DigitalDrummer - looking forward to trying those out with t...

Dude - I just about blew a beer through my nose with the astronaut picture. I had seriously just finished proposing the same setup to the singer, then clicked the link, and holy shit :) That's why I love TOMB. So, the double figure-8 technique worked...pretty well. I'm not thrilled with the acoustic...

Yeah, I considered omni, but there's going to be other stuff layered over, and I'm afraid that I'll regret not having control of the volume independently later.

Good to hear that this is a workable idea :)

Thanks guys

Recording a singing acoustic guitarist

Hello, imaginary internet friends! I have a session tonight, thought I'd run something past the group-brain. The artist coming in this evening has professed being uncomfortable singing without playing his guitar, and vice versa. So, we'll be recording things all at once for performance reasons. Now ...

I made very similar stands to the ones that Al suggests, but used 4" pipe so they'd be heavier.

I'm extremely happy with the results - really helped with stereo separation.

It's important to use kiln-dried (playground) sand - the stuff for concrete can have moisture in it and cause mold issues.

Hey, another Pittsburgh TapeOpper! Where are you located?

I've tried in the past to get a Pittsburgh TapeOp night together - any interest if I try again?

This has been a "missing" feature for some time now. It's actually being added to Nuendo 4, I believe, which probably means we'll see it in Cubase 5.

I can only really say that the brand matters immensely. We tried several different types before settling on the nVision brand that Home Depot sells - they green, red, and blue packaging, we like the green ones best. We found that not only is the quality of light better, but there's less quirks in th...
