Huh - I didn't think to check for that.
I know that I hear the bulbs themselves as they power up, and then once they're good to go, I don't. Or is that what you were talking about by audible hum, not electrical interference?
Anyway, I know they shaved $20 - $30 off my electric bills.

CFLs and Studios - Am I Lucky or Deaf?
OK, so fluorescent lights cause hum. Something in the ballast, I believe. At my last apartment (ever!) before we bought the house, they caused me all sorts of audible, recorded (sometimes) grief. Once we moved in, we started replacing all the incandescents with compact fluorescent lights - the spira...

Yep, I went with that exact route! Left off the second pipe and will use cup hooks to hold the wiring when I get a chance to do a more permanent wiring setup. Right now, the wires wouldn't reach if I went the longer path that would make things look nicer. Whole Stand http://tim.komta.com/Speaker%20S...

I got a 2005 Tama Exotix 6x14 last fall...this thing is the most flexible, dynamic, amazing snare I've ever had. It's made of Bubinga, which is a species of rosewood. To my ears, it has the best of maple and the best of birch, and the worst of neither! They only made 50 of the finish I got, the quil...

Evenin', folks! I've decided that I have the need for some properly massive speaker stands. Really, I need some place to put my speakers, but I might as well do it right while I'm at it. The plan is to have a 3-layer sandwich of 3/4" furniture-grade wood, a 6" PVC column filled with kiln-dried sand,...

Another Nuendo user here - I've had 1.5, 2, and 3 over the years...just always fit better with the way I think. Anyway, here's another vote for the UAD plugs. I have two cards, and use them all the time. SIR is an excellent free convolution reverb, but you better have a hell of a machine to back it ...

Any Pittsburgh MOTU PCI Owners willing to help out?
Hey guys. I don't know if anyone has read my post about the HD192 problems I've been having, but yikes. Anyway, to sum up: it's gotta be the HD192. But I don't want to send it off for three weeks or more if it's NOT the problem. If anyone is willing, I'd really like to test my system with another HD...

Yep, most recent drivers. This system (with the most recent drivers) has been running just fine for 4 years. It's an Intel Chipset. My wife's PC is an older Athlon XP, so I promise it's a different chipset ;) I don't have an external clock that can do 88.2, but I'll try it at 44.1 with my DAT. It's ...

The weirdness continues. Last night, I snagged my wife's PC and installed the MOTU and Nuendo in it. The results were promising - for 25 minutes. 10 minutes monitoring in CueMix - no clicks. 10 minutes monitoring Nuendo's input meters - no clicks. 10 minutes of recording - 1 click, exactly -42.1dB, ...

Money being no object - 3 U47s. Two overheads and about 3 feet in front of the kick. As long as I'm dreaming... One "minimalist" thing I've always really liked is nearly the crotch mic, but thing of it as a "distance" croth mic. Put a small diaphragm condenser between the mounted toms (or between wh...

My absolute favorite (which I cannot afford, alas) is the Summit DCL-200. I miss that thing... Second best (that I've experienced) would be the Waves RennComp. Mainly because that's the closest I've heard to the Summit DCL-200. For aggressive stuff, I'm also partial to the LA2A model for the UAD-1 c...

Yep, I stopped buying HP cables around the same time I stopped buying mic cables... I use Canare StarQuad (thoroughly unnecessary, I just had it lying around from the mic cables) and Neutrik ends. The Neutrik 1/4" TRS ends might be the worst pain in the ass piece of awesome I've ever worked with - t...

Well, pick your favorite expletive - I've probably used it in the past 15 minutes. With a fresh install of Windows and a new firewire cable, still no dice. This means that either the MOTU itself is going, or something's going south with my motherboard? Either way, it's making me cranky. The cable ta...
