i recently did a session with a guy who couldn't get used to standing still and firing..er.. singing (screaming) at an LDC. he's singer only who cups a 58 live. well.. i just threw up an sm7, fed him back ONLY the sm7 in the phones, but put an LDC up right behind it. he controlled his own dynamics f...

Just pull the batteries out and see if they'll power a stompbox or a tuner or something. You can buy the correct 8.4 volt NiCads at Radio Shack! They're about 10 bucks each, but they're the right kind. Just make sure it says "8.4 volts" on the packaging. HOLY totally DEAD. sparked the mic up by its...

You might want to check that the batteries are still good. By now the original NiCds have probably worn out and may not have been replaced yet. I think the E200 used the same setup as the E100/E300, with 2 9v batteries. not a bad idea. i did charge them for 14 hours with phantom power on and the po...

yes- it's definitely one of the dual capsule e100's from the 90's. okay then-- that's sort of what i was thinking. my main INTENT for it, besides just being a utility mic, was to put it on things like room, kick, standup, bass cab-- but MAN is vox off the list unless i'm recording james earl jones.....

CAD E200... what's goin on here?
I just got a CAD E200. Justifiably glad to pick up a nice multipattern for a hundred bucks-- got it home and started testing. I'll preface this by saying-- I don't own a great big pile of LDCs-- but i sparked that thing up, and listening to the rest of my mics... DAMN.. the e200 sounds dry, and kind...

Re: Recording a >LOUD< Metal band
Hello all, I recently started recording my friend's band while they practice. They play in a concrete basement with bad acoustics, at very high volumes. The basement measures 24' x 60' and they play in the back corner. I am wondering what needs to be done to get cleaner mixes. As they are practicin...

i found KRKs kinda strange-- they're pleasant to listen on, but i found them a bit hot on top (fatiguing) for monitoring and i didn't trust the bottom octave.. can't put a finger on it though. also-- how loud are you mixing? it very well could be your monitors in part- but it's worth putting some th...

i've done a lotta work with bluegrass guys-- hard work! i've managed to get solid recordings always live with an LDC around mid chest height- tilted back a scoch. that performs more or less as a vocal mic/ ensemble mic-- but rolled off axis a bit, it'll tame the scree of a mandolin or a banjo, and c...

I bought that same thing a couple of years ago. I haven't measured them or tested them for being an exact match or anything... I just started using them. So, I guess I don't know how well they match... but, I know that I get a nice stereo image when I use them together. that's really all i'm concer...

can anyone speak to consistency of Cascade Fatheads?
I was thinking of getting a blumlein set of Fathead II's... anybody know how well they match them?
i'd go with some of the lesser ribbons-- but seems that it's worth the extra money to get a couple that sound like vague relatives, and apparently, that isn't what you get for $75 each!
thanks all!

I was assuming that using that mic technique was the goal. If the goal is to make that drummer sound good, close mic the kit. The Glyn Johns technique gives you a clear picture of what is actually happening. If that sound doesn't fit the project, don't use the technique. hope i didn't come off as b...

The drummer needs to a. get quieter cymbals b. hit the drums harder than the cymbals c. all of the above With that mic technique, the drummer has to mix the kit himself as he plays. Not a lot of drummers do that any more, which will make this mic technique useless. only problem i see is this: the d...

rr.. i WAS gonna say rotate your cymbals off axis... but that's a little tricky with earthworks mics! i usually use cardioids, and turn the cymbals into the nulls some-- anything to cut the shine-- and then eq down a few dbs around 3k to get the gnarliest aspects back in check. it's not perfect, for...
