Re: Chips and Caps

Why yes, the VFM. I've done a little work on Tridents, and I seem to recall a situation once where there were oscillation problems on a few of the hi boost/cuts of a particular board I was working on. That was definitely caused by bad caps in each particular gyrator circuit. (a gyrator is a type of ...

Re: Chips and Caps

hmm...TL074's in a console...are you using a Neotek? (just wondering) Well, I should have clarified this in the first place--most de-coupling caps are ceramic, not film. Sorry for the confusion. Film caps in EQ are used in the filter section itself. This is an interesting failure...I must admit I've...

Re: Chips and Caps

There's no way (well, maybe there is a way, but I'd rather not know about it) that all 64 of those caps are in the audio path. My guess is that some of those are bandwidth-limiters, some might be de-couplers (those are connected between the opamp supply pins and the voltage source--usually .1uf or s...

Re: Chips and Caps

Sorry if I offended you Joel...my post was pretty rude. I notice that
you contribute alot to this board, and that's good. As you can see, I've only recently started posting here--it looks like I got a little carried away.

Plz accept my apology.

Re: Chips and Caps

Cool. I won't blather for too long. This is only for uncompensated single opamps, and it's used to figure out the value of the capacitor between pins 5 and 8. C=1/2pi(F)(R/10) R=value of input resistor F= 1/(10 x unity gain bandwidth) Let me take a moment to explain, if I may, why this capacitor is ...

Re: Chips and Caps

IMHO, re chipping a mackie would take more time and money than it would be worth. Decent 5534's are not cheap, and considering there are few discrete components in the mackie, you would probably spend WAY more than you wanted to, for not much sonic improvement. 1)Why, oh why on god's green earth wo...

Re: Tubes for preamps?

In that respect, the difference lies primarily in the tube's headroom. I'm sure you've noticed that some tubes break up earlier than others. IMO, if you want a high headroom tube that gives you a lot of detail, the old Telefunken long-plates are great. That's why I recommended the Ei to you--they're...

Re: Tubes for preamps?

Ei, a yugoslavian company, makes a nice reproduction of telefunken's ECC83 longplate. It's cheap, and it sounds great--even in a starved-plate configuration. That's what I'd recommend. They used to be about $5 or so a year ago from Triode Electronics.
