My home recordings with some good mixing/mastering, alt-acoustic tunes:

I really like how bandcamp works on iPhone in mobile view, sounds nice (for mp3s).

As a musician (I'm the self-financed type that was mentioned previously), there's a certain insecurity factor here too. If a studio just said that you'd like to have a copy as a "just in case" reference for other bands or projects, I'd send one in a second. Wrap it in a compliment, not a business-y ...

When I listen to streaming Rhapsody (which I do via iPhone or to preview albums), I'm pretty sure it's 128 kbps. And I've thought about this topic too, it seems like Ryan Adams stuff doesn't sound good as mp3 and I'm not sure why or if it's my imagination. Personally, with my home recorder-grade mic...

I think it can be important for potential home recorder clients too. For example, I'm sort of shopping around for mastering, I have a Duet/Mac/~$100-$300 mic sort of set up. Nothing fancy. But, of course, I look at Sweetwater and other places all the time and think how great it would be to have or u...

I think your approach is great. As another person who does home recording, when I listen to recordings, I always favor the ones that capture a great feeling, not the ones that are sonically best. Mileage varies, but a home recording set-up isn't going to sound like Sear Sound no matter what. I go on...

I don't own a studio, but in terms of business to business purchases, this is the norm. A PO (purchase order) is essentially a contract that has a billing address, a shipping address, the product being purchased, the price, and the payment terms. Net: 30 terms are standard, and does mean that the in...

Oh, and jgimbel, I appreciate the kind words. My recording "talent" is solely knowing that I don't know much about recording and just getting an honest room sound. :D The biggest leap I made in recording was going from an Epiphone acoustic to a Martin. Maybe some day I'll know how to add reverb tast...

Recording and mixing for YouTube
Hi Everyone, I created and posted my first YouTube video lately, and realized just how little I know about video formats. I also started to wonder whether it's better to use WAV files and only go to compressed file format after adding video, or use an MP3 during video editing. Anyone have recommenda...

I've always felt that a great recording will never make an average song great. But a bad recording will always make an average song bad. So I'm half with you. But then again, I love those old VU songs when the guitar solo comes in WAY too loud because they were probably tracking all instruments to 2...

You know, I was actually thinking about this lately too, but in the total opposite direction. Since basically my entire family plays either Guitar Hero or Rockband now, I realized that this translates to tab pretty well, and we recorded a real song together lately. They had a lot of fun. It didn't t...
