Re: Made on a 488MKii and pressed to vinyl
Hi TOMB friends! I made another LP and thought I'd let you know. This one I did at my friend's cool studio, instead of on the Tascan 488 (which died a few years ago). You can pre-order vinyl at mikeuva.com Here is the video for the first single, "Waco": https://vimeo.com/261553354 . . . and here's a...

Upon seeing this thread pop up again I have to chime in and say that ~3 years after buying this record it still gets regular play and is a valued part of my collection. A number of guests have been impressed by it, too. The songs and spirit really hold up well past the novelty of the recording medi...

This is probably the most inspiring thing I've heard in years. I've had debate after debate with one friend about the idea that you could record a "real" record in a home studio. Generally, my friend is right, and this is the exception that proves the rule. In addition to kudos on the recording and...

We used TWO mics on the drums, a tube condenser floating over the kick and a Heil mic inside the kick.. both bussed to one track. The kick is way too loud but nothing can be done about that now!! I'm happy to commit to 8 tracks while recording, but I do like the flexibility of mixing in the compute...

Mikey, did you mix these on the 488? Or do the laborious export process? Curious about your tracking setup as well... I recorded and mixed on the 488, with the exception of the first track, which i handed over to my friend brian straw to mix. Export process isn't too bad once you figure out the tri...

If it's only at that same point every time, my guess would be your tape is worn in that spot (old tape of lots of rw and ff in that area???) or there's a bad punch in/splice, or the noise is from the guitar/amp/etc itself and it was recorded that way. If a second machine is not available to test, t...

Tascam 488mkii advice: symptom of dying track?
Hi, I've had this Tascam cassette multitracker for quite a long time. I've been working on a mix, and one of the 8 tracks (#7, an electric guitar part that comes in at the chorus) crackles and drops out for a few seconds before it rights itself. Like a bad instrument cord connection, where you have ...

Thanks DrummerMan, Here's a thread about a similar session I did in 2012: http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=81734 Just a trio this time (w/some overdubs), my main dilemma was whether to close mic the piano, but I am drawn to your x-y room suggestion using the RE-20 for the vocals. Much ...

My first instinct based on what you have would be to setup your 2 rodes in xy then position all the instruments around that until you've got the levels and presence basically where you want it, especially with the piano an guitar. Then, I'd put the RE20 on your vocals, and try to find a nice spot f...

Yeah I agree that a stereo pair is a great approach, though I think it provides less flexibility during the mix. If you have great players (with masterful control of dynamics) in a great room then yes a stereo pair is a no brainer, supplemented with 2 more spot mics depending on what you are hearin...
