I trust you Chris, and I'm sure there are times when it's appropriate to not compress in mastering with certain styles of music. Most mastering engineers work multible genre though, and I find that having uncompressed mixes generally makes for a smoother mastering experience. I think there's less po...

Chris, in my experience, there are very very few mixes that don't need at least some compression, and only in certain genres. The point of the compression isn't to fix a sub-par mix, it's to glue the mix together. 99% of the time, how awesome the mix is doesn't really have anything to do with if it ...

Great responses!

Hey guys, I'm super pleased that so many people have responded with a variet of viewpoints on the subject! I'm a little confused by the comment below: so sure, it might not be leaving a lot for the mastering engineer to do. but that isn't the goal - the goal is to make amazing mixes. Isn't the goal ...

Jon, What a fantastic and well articulated response. I think you're right, but my only objection would be that often, when mix buss compression is added, while it might sound great in the mixing stage and create no "pumping" effect, it's not uncommon for me to find that my mastering process reveals ...

I agree Jesse, unfortunately for me though, particularly with dance music, I sometimes get very very compressed/clipped music, not just light limitting. It's not too uncommon for me to encounter songs from musicians who self engineered and who aren't familiar with what a master bus even is. In this...

Very cool guys. Scott, I'm the biggest fan of guys/gals who use your workflow. Having that limiter on there at least some of the time while mixing does help a ton to get an idea of what aspects of the mix will change when it's compressed in mastering. I run into problems with some people not doing t...

Thanks for your reply fosiltooth, how many DB to you typically compress, and with what? What style of music do you typically work with?

Also, thanks brother! I'm learning.

Good for you Nick! I think that's the way everyone should do, but I'm curious to hear from people who might disagree, and what their reasons for doing so are.

I think there's a general misconception among many of todays artist was a producer really "is". I think a big upfront convo about what producing a project really means is helpful. Finding a mastering engineer that will give mix feedback is nice as well to have a third party to bounce things off of. ...

My experience too Larry, I'd estimate I get a copy less than 1% of the time. : (
If it's a local project, that number is maybe 2% ; (

Audio Mastering Engineer with question for Mix Engineers

Hey all, Chris Graham here. I'm a music mastering engineer out of Columbus, Oh. Got a question for all you people out there in Tape Op land. I've been getting a lot of masters from artists who's mix engineers have compressed their master bus. I'm wondering how many of you by a show of hands give you...
