Another great reason to compress to tape... if you end up wanting to compress more tracks than you own compressor channels for, come mixdown, then you'll be bummed that you didn't compress to tape. All-digital folks don't have to worry about that, since they have as many compressor plug-in instances...

You don't need to do anything to upgrade to PT M-Powered 7.1 except for an iLok with a valid license to run PT M-P 6.8 or greater. All you have to do is download the FREE 7.1 update here: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProToolsMPowered71-main.html#download And then install it on your machine,...

If one has the metering set post-fader on individual tracks in PT, and raises the fader high enough to light up the 'clip indicator' for that channel, is it actually clipping, and if so, where? The track isn't clipping. (But keep in mind that plug-ins can clip, regardless of what you're doing with ...

I'm still holding out. It feels more and more like vapourware as we enter year 2 of 'it's coming'. but. damn. I almost bought the 3-button jr version a couple months ago: http://store.artlebedev.com/catalog/computer_add-ons/optimus-mini-three/ but online reviews of it were so scathing (particularly...

formzero, Don't get that particular mini keyboard because it's meant for use while you're holding the keyboard in your hands (as if it's a large remote for a Media Center PC, for example). Note that the "mouse" buttons are operated by the left thumb while the trackball is operated by the right thumb...

http://www.ymouse.com/xkeys.php AWESOME! They're kinda expensive, but there's good variety in the line. And the one w/ the jog wheel is cool!!! If you end up getting one, lemme know. (I still like the Cherry QWERTY keyboard with the extra programmable keys on it better... with the X-keys products, ...

Program and label this sucker . Track arm, transport, whatever. Or if you've got a DAW, you're gonna need a QWERTY keyboard, so get one of these bad-asses from Cherry with programmable, label-able (um, is that word?) keys. Make 'em track arms, transport, or whatever the heck you want them to be (ass...

The issue isn't just the possibility of bad summing math, but 'where' in the chain the master fader is. It generally is after the 'summing amp' and therefore, if you're clippiing with the master at '0' you might be, depending on the way the DAW is structured, be clipping prior to that fader. The "s...

The short answer: Take down the master fader. Why? Because for any well-implemented software mixer--where the summing accumulator is significantly larger and often double the size of the incoming words--it's impossible to overload the accumulator. The coefficient of (numerical value representing) th...

I see three options: 1. Write the plug-in yourself... and sell it and make some money! Cool idea, by the way. 2. Buy a new USB MIDI interface that supports SMPTE sync. This might run you $100 and up. 3. Find a used non-USB MIDI interface that supports SMPTE... or a dedicated SMPTE to MTC converter. ...
