Notation and DAWs

Pro Tools notation works pretty well, as did Logic last time I used it. No problem if you're just using ghost midi tracks to generate parts, but if you are using any MIDI instruments in your mixes, you'll find that correctly noted parts sound pretty stiff, and if you play more naturally, the notatio...

2011 Mini here

Replaced boot drive with an SSD from OWC, rather than upgrade to a new machine. Newer ones have slower spinning HDs, 5400 is not really suitable for what I'm doing, maybe light tracking is ok. But heavy track counts and streaming virtual instruments would not work. The top model might be ok with the...

Suggestions for panning stereo tracks

Especially virtual instruments. Would love to be an all live tracking purist but schedule often doesn't permit. Most VIs are stereo, and panning them doesn't really work as pan (at least in Pro Tools, where stereo tracks don't pan, they just have volume for each channel, which is not the same). Ther...

Another Pro Tools user

I've been on Pro Tools off and on since v3. Switched to Logic for a while and I know a lot of composers use it, but I found that getting frame accurate sync was not so reliable. Working on animation with a lot of 'mickey mousing' score wise, so that was a critical determining factor. Plus mix stages...

Music For Picture

I do a lot of TV work - here are a few things I've learned on the job that would have helped up front - some have already been said in this thread but, fwiw: I spot episodes with producers and discuss what they want. Much of the time there's temp music in place already which I have to match in feel ...

Suggestions for basement studio closet?

Setting up a small project studio in my new home - far from ideal acoustically, but it's what I have to work with. 7'3"H  x 11'3"W x 12'4"L (there's a full width closet opposite the entry door with 6' accordion doors, so the true length maybe should be 14'7"?). Mainly mixing, but some tracking...

Yeah but no

Thanks - Deerhoof definitely did a lot of cut and paste recording early on, but that's not who I had in mind - the guy I'm thinking of not only edited the linear flow, but also recorded one string at a time, building up chords that way instead of strumming. Why the hell would you do this is a reason...

Who's the guitarist who recorded string by string?

Anyone heard of an avant-garde/indie art guitarist who recorded guitar one string at a time? Weird concept, but I heard him on WFMU years back and can't track down his name. Cut-and-paste stuff, very precise, mechanized sound, but also organic, as it is guitar music - kind of like the Books, only mo...

Recommend an ear training program for mixing?

Looking for something to fill in some gaps of acquired knowledge. As a musician who's gotten into recording without ever interning or formally studying, I know a lot of principles and techniques, but would sort of like to find something equivalent to ear-training exercises for musicians, to help dev...

i agree with mostly everybody, thanks for the feedback. even the couple replies that sound like I'M being unreasonable, those are actually consistent with what i'm talking about, and also, the differences of situational perspective are illuminating. this kind of engineering work is definitely a litt...

I agree with you Jim, I see where the corpos are coming from, I guess I just think they have to be more accountable with time estimates. I'd like to take credit for sessions going quick, but it's usually inexperienced producers or celebrity talent wanting to knock off early to make a pilates class o...

Freelancing by the hour - Billing for canceled sessions, etc

When possible I bill by project or day rate, but one particular corner of the market - VO recording for corporate jobs (audiobooks, museum tours, etc)- pays strictly hourly. (Ironically, the clients with the most revenue- maybe not so ironic, it's how they KEEP it...) The clock starts not when you a...
