Great idea! Just anchor the lug on the black wire underneath sandwiched between the capsule and the plastic base. This even saves having to solder!
I'll give it a shot.

Mic mod noob MXL 990 simple question
I'm undertaking my first EVER mic mod project on two MXL 990s that I got for cheap. These mics have the same circuit as the MXL 603s from what I've heard so the circuit mods have been simple. After successfully completing the circuit mods I decided to tackle the capsule and body. As many of you know...

Hi! Both studios mentioned look amazing! Yeah, I'm finishing up my PhD in Michigan and have a research position lined up at the MIND Institute which is attached to the UC Davis Medical Center. I'm not sure I'll ever have the time or space to set up and attract a few clients like I have now in MI so ...

TOMB in Sacramento/Northern Cal?
I'm moving to Sacramento this summer and would like to get involved in the recording community out there. Does anyone know some friendly people/studios out there? I do this mostly as a hobby so I'm not looking for a work. I'm happy to share gear and experience if someone needs help or wants to team ...

Thanks for all the info so far. I think since it's my first choir gig I might set up two sets of mics. 1. A spaced pair of modified MXL 990s. (still haven't actually done this mod so I can't know for sure if they'll be appropriate) 2. A Blumlein pair of Fatheads. That way I've got a standard AND a "...

I'm not too wise on this subject but I can offer one story. My wife and I bought her a Kentucky brand mandolin a few years back with little knowledge on what to look for in a mandolin. That thing was HARD as hell to play. The pressure needed to intonate a note properly was incredible!! I play bass (...

Total typo there. The tubes were USED. At least I suspect they all were since they were in the gear. Still though, it was the find of a lifetime. I cringe now when I think about the fact that I dropped two Mullard red tips as I was grabbing them all thinking "I wonder if these are worth anything mor...

If there's a saxophone player on the session, 90% of the time (s)he will be very sharp anyway (why do they all do that?), so I'll fudge my tuning that way. I KNOW! Doesn't matter of it's bari, tenor or alto. SHARP! Anyway, my suggestion: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EX29/ or the 25s for $...

Oh I'm definitely willing to replace the tubes!! I've got a unused supply of Amperex, RCA, Mullard and GE tubes from the 60's and 70s that I found in some psychology testing gear being tossed out. I sold enough of them to fund a custom amp project but still got several left. Thanks for the input so ...

Opinions on cheap stereo pres?
Me: small budgeted recording enthusiast seeking lovely stereo mic pre You: helpful matchmaker with opinions and wisdom on such things. Blumlein pair for choral recording? Anybody try it?
I've seen people recommend stereo ribbon mics for choir recording from time to time. I don't have a stereo ribbon but I do have two Fatheads and I've always wanted to try recording with them as a Blumlein array. Isn't this basically the same thing? How would this differ from a single stereo ribbon m...

Thanks for all the great advice so far! I'm sure I'll use a lot of it. I gave them a cost estimate the other day and they'll be getting back to me. Many of the mics suggestions were reasonable (ie around $500) and that's very encouraging. However a pair of U87s is well beyond my means. How does one ...

First Choir Project! Don't want to screw it up. Tips!?
My efforts to expand out of just recording singer-songwriters and funk groups is beginning to pay off and I've got a 30 person male choir interested in recording an album, but I'm a little intimidated. Things I know to try for: 1. If at all possible record in a great room. They said the church they ...
