Re: Budgeting: Real Studio vs DAW
"full control room, tracking room and tielines" this doesn't mean shit. Great records have always been about people, not gear or facility. Nigel could surely come kick some ass in my bedroom studio. Or, the major studios in town that I patronize from time to time. I think he would have more fun at t...

Re: Cool Edit Pro advice please
cool thanks guys. I'm excited about the Red Rover too. The developers just seem to be right in touch with my home-recordist aesthetic, lots of cool features at a cheap price with minimal bs.

Cool Edit Pro advice please
The Shins post got me thinking about this again. . . I'm about to be a Logic expatriate (since part of what I do to pay the bills is build PCs, don't get me started). I've been looking at options including Nuendo, Cool Edit, and Samplitude. Meanwhile my brother is jumping in with Cool Edit because o...

Re: Best All Around Condensor Mikes for 4-tracking
One of my faves is my obscure AT condenser (C87MKII or something like that, bought it on clearance from Full Compass a while back for a bill). Just a new direction from the C1s, Oktavas, etc (which I'm also a fan of, dont get me wrong).
I think this would be the Totino's of condensers.

Re: Chorus pedals...
Yes, the Analogman chorus is very, very good. I have quite a few choruses lying around (Boss CE-1 maybe, Ibanez Multis UE400 and 405, etc.) and the am is the most lush hands down, yet without the shiny sort of cheese that some others promote somehow.
It's a keeper.

Hey transmothra--
what more do you know about the michael kelly guitars? have you played one?
that really is chump change; I've been looking for a cheapesque gold top for a while.
thanks!

Re: Midi Patchbay
I have a similar, simple setup and still use an Akai ME30PII that I bought in junior high. It's 4 in, 8 out, 30 programs, one merge function. That's it, but it's reliable, no wall wart, and you can find 'em for like 10 bucks.

Re: Focusrite greens, anyone?
Yeah, as far as the looks, trying to be different without cause usually results in ballsac. But, it sounds like it might be a decent color/ occasional go-to for the right price.

Re: cheap compressor ok for live sound?
What style of music are you playing. I sometimes use a Drawmer LX20 (the cheapo) for synths; this is a classic approach along the lines of Depeche Mode to Kraftwerk, hell to NWA for that matter. Any genre or style with banging synth patches can benefit. On the other hand, if you're playing piano/B-3...
