A great value I stumbled across is the Analog Man tube screamer, housed in a Boss Super Overdrive case. About 100 bucks and it really stands up to the Fulldrives, etc. of the world.

Focusrite greens, anyone?
Hey guys, I have a chance to pick up a Focusrite Green (Voicebox Mk 2 I believe) on a cheap trade (350-ish), and I'm just wondering if anyone is using this as a color box/etc. How would you describe the sound, and compare to the other common cheap pres/strips around (i.e., RNP/RNC, Sytek, Meek, Syme...

What ridiculous assholes. I really can't imagine a more ludicrous music-related lawsuit, or a bigger sellout for a band that used to bank on being "derivative".

If you look carefully you can find an Ensoniq ASR-X for around 300. This is a killer box--it favorably compares to the MPC series in many ways. I think the resampling is top notch. Believe me, this is a quantum leap from the SR-16s of the world for not much more coin. Make sure to get one with a scs...

Yep, Fletcher beat me to it but when I went throught this same issue recently I finally decided on the DVC.
I couldn't be happier--this box rocks the house. I use it in a Logic based system for both tracking a wide variety of sources and as a stereo buss compressor.
HIGHLY recommended.

I'm curious about the Mercurys. How do they compare to Reveals, or NS10s?

Re: TapeOp Con - Thank you!!!!
I got trapped behind a veritable wall of grannies in a "family of the bride" photoshoot on the first floor. They absolutely refused to let me passed, so they're gonna have an unidentified recording geek looking like he's taking a shit in the back row of their glamor shots. They really tried to elbow...

Why not an older amp? The 70s/80s Traynors and Music Mans crush the reissues at a cheaper price--I use both. They rule.

Re: the Tube Screamer rules!
On a related note, I have an Analog Man tubescreamer clone that's built into a Boss Overdrive case. This is a killer way to get a boutique-style ts at a pawnshop price. Exact same guts, sheep's clothing style. I love it on synths and rhodes as well as guitar.

the Demeter spring reverb is a great place to start--not cheap, but probably around 500 bucks. It sounds killer.

Re: What guitar rocks your recording world?
man I 'm happy to see folks giving G&Ls props--they've been my secret weapons for a while. Currently I have 2--the aforementioned ASAT (I have Rio Grande P90s in it--they rule, way hotter than stock), and the sleeper--F-100. Anyone used one of these? Lots of selectors, humbucker/single coil switches...

Re: if you don't know now you know (great mic pres)
I love mine too (bb 3-4).
The mute switch is FANTASTIC if, like me, you end up doing a lot of tracking right in front of your monitors. I wish all my pres had 'em. A pad would be cool too, though.
Anyone compared the Sytek to the RNP? I've heard they're quite similar.

Re: What to do about a loud hard drive?
The Silent Drive enclosures seem to work fine with 7200 rpm drives--I've done so for 2 years or so with no problems. Seems like the cutoff was 7200 when I bought mine. However, the fan is always the worst noisemaker for me, it seems. I've been thinking about moving to water cooled, but damn it makes...

I know a really incredible music magazine, it's my bible for what's happening in underground music, fashion, and cool things to say. They're so ahead of the trends it's scary. The name is Spin.
