Re: ml52 manual?
It's an Oktava mic unlikely they'd provide anything other than the black pouch it comes in! Look for an extra mic clip too, the clips don't last very long.

Re: HD follow up
You'll pay more for a standalone device that won't be the standard. Pro Tools is in every major studio and there is a real strong compatibility/conversant aspect of using it. Work in the same domain every one else is. Take tracks home, go back in the studio, either way it's totally versatile. The st...

Re: royer 121 drawbacks
I had the opportunity to do the ribbon mic shoot out at the Royer facility in Burbank. They've got this little booth crammed with all the known ribbon mic models all whacked through a Mackie and couple sets of headphones. The RCA44 was beefy, but quiet. Had a weird directional buzz like a single coi...

Re: Creating and applying REAL room reverb
Big houses are great for that! I re-amp drums in my kitchen. Use as many mics as you can and blend them. Different distances, different surfaces. The only unpleasantness usually comes in the parallel wall scenarios that create that ugly ringing tone. Try using a mic such as a Neumann KM84 or Oktava ...

Re: ATA vs. SCSI hard drives
Forget the mobility issue of Firewire or SCSI, go for raw speed. Internal ATA drives are now available at blazing speeds of 10,000rpm and 15,000rpm. Don't even bother with a 7200rpm drive. If you got two as data archive drives and ran your unit in 'round robin' record mode, you're system would be un...

Re: SPIDF - any real world uses?
I've been using it alot recently dumping tracks into Pro Tools from Roland VS1680s and Roland VS1880s.
Used to use the connection alot in the studio too for digital dat cloning. Always an option when one doesn't have an AES/EBU connect.

Thought of another one, The Dream Syndicate's 'Days of Wine and Roses'. Skinny record, great songs. Who would have guessed Kendra Smith would have spawned a band like Mazzy Star?

Re: Recording audio into a pregap...
I have heard of a few discs where that was done. Songs that play before the first start id on the disc and the only way to access the track is to scan back after the first song starts. Check with a real mastering facility in New York or Los Angeles.

Re: Compessor Plug-ins, any preferences?
Doesn't Metric Halo make an EQ and compressor all built in a single plugin? I thought I had seen it before, but haven't used it. Their 'Spectrafoo' frequency analyzer was cool.

Re: The "Friends" record collection
Yes, and most of the lyric writers were from Warner Television and were writers of the show! That's my point too, why would such inane drivel require 8 writers? By the way, Danny and Phil from the Rembrandts were sheepishly involved with this. The song/show had a life of its own. Weird synergy.

My pick for best dinky disc is Dinosaur Jr's "Bug" disc on SST. Thin, scratchy and aggressive. All the spirit of playing through those vintage Fender Tweed amps in over the top fashion.
Second pick is Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra in a reading of Beethoven's 5th symphony.

Re: questions from a 'newbie' to mastering (well, kinda newb
I've worked with Producers who have an image in their mind of what various mastering engineers will yield. Some guys always use the same mastering engineer, but others will consider the sound of the equipment a certain guy has before they make a decision to go to a particular facility. For example, ...

Check out the Q10 byt Aardvark. 8 preamps in the interface with shielded audio cards. Too smart.
