Re: The "Friends" record collection

MC5 = White Stripes. Detroit bands, gang, remember? The Stooges are having a resurgence now too. As for Rachael (Aniston) having any sympathies for the MC5, I think nothing could be further from her character. A bad decision from the viewpoint of the show as she's ugly conservative to the core. Re: Compessor Plug-ins, any preferences?

The Fairchild plugin doesn't behave like a real unit. I've always found them to be the kind of thing you have 'in line' but never really use for heavy limiting and compressing. They are woefully mushy. The plugin does offer the throaty EQ curve of the original though. Always makes a bass drum sound ...

Re: optimizing macs for PT: please help me clean up my drive

Pro Tools requires 2 hard drives. One solely runs the program, the other acts a data archive. They suggest the data archive drive should be 7200rpm at minimum. There are many 10,000rpm and 15,000rpm internal drives available now. You can even run 2 drives as the data archive and the computer will wr...

Re: Pearl Jam "Binaural"

Been of fan of Brendan O'Brien for a long, long time. The Michael Penn record he did 'Resigned' is a favorite. I wonder how many people got the Prisoner (Patrick McGoohan's series in the late 60s) thing out of it. 'Superunknown' speaks for itself and the STP stuff is mostly stellar. Alot of times I ...

Re: Kick Drum

I'm not giving away my own meat and potatos drum sound here, but two important elements I gravitate toward are: 1) the Evans drum head for bass drum with the 2 different dampening rings. Makes the worst drum make the sound of R-O-C-K! 2) Have a variety of beaters in the studio to choose from. Wood, ...

Aardvark dude. The Q10 is a smart box. The audio cards are even shielded to prevent jitter. The Aardvark Aardsync II is also a renowned digital clock in the industry. Check them out.

Re: your favorite Makeout Music

I do have one rock and roll evening when I was a discjockey at a commercial rock station that might relate here. Started out in the afternoon when I was doing a remote broadcast from a record store instore with Dio for WKQZ-FM in Saginaw. Hanging out with the band and the Warner record rep at the ti...

Re: Compessor Plug-ins, any preferences?

There are tons to choose from. I came across one that I exceptionally liked called 'analog channel'. I believe it's made by MCDSP. There may be two in that set. One (AC1) simulates various consoles and the other (AC2) simulates tape. One preset in AC1 (console 3 in the presets) sounds like an SSL ch...

Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain" and John Coltrane's "Ole'" would be consistent favs in this house...possibly, the Twin Peaks soundtrack or Kruder & Dorfmeisters "K & D sessions".

Re: do you ever get sick of it

I got a demo recently of a band in Columbus, Ohio that absolutely lit me up. A sound somewhere between Genesis and Grant Lee Buffalo with solid melodic content and great time signature use. Arty and eclectic. The band is called 'Wallace's Line' and they had me do a mix for them. They are in the proc...

My panning choices are always limited by two factors-Control Room Acoustics and the wax build-up in my ears! Lol.

Re: delimma/question

I worked in several 'Guerilla' studio set-ups. One was in Lake Tahoe and they were able to lease an SSL J-Series console for a Whitesnake mix. David Coverdale wanted to stay close to home for the mix. In a case like that, which came first, the gig or the equipment? The console was only up there for ...

With Corporate Radio and Bush in office, there most certainly is no future for guys like us. Researched songs that are deemed 'hits' according to listeners before they even hit the airwaves, then every song becomes a paid advertisement with no disclosure to the public. Yeah, it's disheartening and k...
