For me as a big Beatles fan, it's really tough to choose stereo or mono for one LP. There's a lot of great mono mixes that had stuff left out of the stereo mixes, and there's also some lousy mono mixes as well (the STEED echo on "Paperback Writer" is really crap compared to the stereo mix). For me, ...

Re: Roland VS-2480
A cheaper and less powerful option is the Fostex VF-16 and/or VF-160. Can also support up to 16 tracks of simultaneous recording. I've got a VF-16. It can only record 8 tracks at a time. The other 8 are doubled on 9-16 if you record all 16. Still, not bad when you're recording a 4 piece band live. ...

Wendy Carlos had the same problem a few years back. Luckily she was able to recover the tapes in time for a quick A/D transfer for a remaster using the baking method. A very interesting read.

I just picked up a Brick Audio plate reverb, made nearby in Elgin, IL. I've never seen a square plate reverb, nor have I heard of this brand, but needless to say I couldn't pass it up. The seller was a very cool cat; it's possible he might be here on the board. It'll be a few weeks or a month until...

I'd love to see what's floating around for Animals , too. I recently read an interview with Nick Mason where he mentioned that Umma Gumma was likely to be next if the others sell well. He said in the last issue Saucerful was on the list next, but didn't go into details apart from surviving BBC sess...

I miss using my 4track so much. Damn thing busted on me and I cant fix it so I gotta replace it eventually. Although I do like that I'm using a digital 16T, but there's so many things it cant do that a 4track can: tape saturation, varispeed (especially during recording!!), backwards recording, simpl...

Mics. I recorded my new band a couple times on my digital 16track with all mics. the next session I DI'd the guitar amp (the only amp that has that capability) and it sounded worse in the mix, even with a decent amount of bleedover on the bass & drum mics. The final session was much better. I DI'd o...

To back mention, however, "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" is a travesty to listen to in mono. The stereo is ALL the fun. That's the right kind of madness, methinks. The landscapes create a sonic wonderland - forests with strange birds squawking, etc... it adds atmosphere, creates something new. Are yo...

have you heard white noise? that's pretty great too. yeah, the combination of mad skillz, english teeth and accent, and that almost erotic languidity in both the cadences of her voice and the way her hand dangles from the wrist are, frankly, captivating. total time-machine crush. don't forget the B...

When I mixed one of my 4track songs to Audacity, I mixed the first 4tracks in stereo (live panning too), then mixed the remaining reduction overdubs (this particular song had about 4 reductions, very lo-fi backing track by the end result) in stereo as well, and synched them all up when I was done mi...

Any opinions on the Tascam 244? Someone is selling one ultra cheap here. I had a 244. I only used it so I can bounce to another 4T (instead of to a 2T & back to the 4T). The EQ's arent low/mid/hi but the actual frequency settings. That bugged me a lot. But you could make a cool wah effect with them...
