Re: Mixing vocals in 'parallel'
I've done that with an alto-sax lead that was a "foreground/background" part (an importnat line but subservient to the lead vocal).
One track clean, the other with just a little bit of tube distortion to fatten it up. Blend to taste.

Re: Tame Impala's gritty guitar sound
You could try a Big Muff or some other fuzz-tone cheese boxes n-line with a cheap eq pedal, or maybe a cry-baby wah (use an an eq, not a wah; you know, leave it half-open, or experiment with footboard positions until you get the sound you're looking for). Try solid state vs. tube amps, if you have t...

Re:Two new songs finished: Would love some objective reviews
Hey man,
"The Distance..." sounds great. Nice sound, well-performed, great recording. Nice guitars and vocals. Love the drums too. Maybe some more clarity in the bass (that's a nit-picky comment, I know). Nice strings too!
Same comments for "Painting Sheri." Nice background vox too. Great work!

Not exactly an "electronics " project, but if you want to build an inexpensive mic, Google the "Austin Ribbon Mic."

Re: please critique my new song!
OK, I'll give it a go. Caveat being I have no other playback/speaker combination for Mp3's than the Dell computer and RealPlayer I'm listening on, on these tiny little Dell speakers, so I can only pontificate as accurately as the media and medium allow. Take with an appropriate-sized grain of salt. ...

Re: >>>>Quotes<<<< That's funny. I was just reading an article on Steve Ferrone today, where he was praising Ringo. I was going to post a quote, but it seems anti-climactic now. Point is he was and is good and is probably the most influential rock drummer in history. My beef with Ringo is that I can...

Re: Analog tape machine
There are a bunch of pretty decent 2-tracks (Teac, Tascam, Akai, Pioneer) on ebay. Check here: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=reel+to+reel&_sacat=See-All-Categories If you search "Nagra" at ebay, 3 or 4 machines come up right now. Average seems to be about a grand even...

Re: Mixing for crappy little earbuds
Hey, * Have you tried some simple mastering/pre-mastering of your mixes (compression/loudness maximization)? * Have you tried including CLE's in your control room monitoring menu? * Have you tried bass traps, or any room treatment or compensating EQ? As the other guys mentioned, it's probably the ro...

Re: Empire of the Sun / Sleepy Jackson vocal tricks
OK, went back and listened again (quite a bit louder; family was watching TV in the same room the first time)... Definitely multiple vox; I think even some of the whiny verse/pre-chorus vocal is doubled (the "We are the people..." section). Interesting, this tune is oddly reminiscent of Al Stewart.....

Re: Electronics Classes.
I took electronics in Boy Scouts, in high school (several classes0, and there was quite a bit of it in my college recording class... I remember almost none of it. What I _do_ remember is not resistor codes, but the time I touched something called a pulse generator (?), and was transported across the...
