I'm not sure how well it would do. The technological atmosphere when the 388 was first released was a lot different since it was before the cassette portastudio was available. The 388 WAS the small economical option to home recording. Now with computers I don't know that anyone would really be into ...

I don't think it's as important to create a custom website that's built and coded from the ground up. I think 2-way blog formats like Tumblr, Bandcamp, Soundcloud have really taken over as the better option. The days of "website as a 1-way billboard" are over. If you are going to put up a website th...

I'm pretty sold on the idea of getting a 388 or 38 for recording drums and dumping into pro tools. But, I'm wondering, would the 388 have any mojo that the 38 doesn't have when used just for tracking? I think the main difference is the presence of having a mixing console feeding into the tape deck....

what outboard gear compliments the 388 well? I'm thinking about compressors (dbx 160xt), preamps (Art Pro Channel), and maybe a spring reverb unit (vanamps, some old ebay finds). what have you found pairs well with it? Doing a mix off the 388 with a spring reverb unit and and tape echo wired up to ...

holy shit i am having the worst luck this month. so i got the new sample drive going and all my data restored and up and running again about 2 weeks ago and got back to projects. and BAM! yesterday my boot drive won't boot! I'd be willing to bet that it's an intermittent data or power connection to...

Re: low playback levels on playback on channels 1 & 8
Now all 8 channels work! I did a bunch of tests on the tracks using tones, tone sweeps and a drum track comparing the channels to each other. It seems like channel one may not be as bright as the others, but just by a tad if any at all. Anyways it's toally workable now. Thanks everybody for the tip...

Re: low playback levels on playback on channels 1 & 8
I can deal with 1 missing track, but it'd be great to get them all working! I know... it's frustrating. I would remove the guide again and try something that makes me cringe a bit but it worked for me. Take a reel and fast forward or rewind the entire reel across the tape heads. You'll have to push...

EDIT: I've just discovered that whenever the tape-outs are connected to another machine (like my DAW converters) I get a -3db drop in my 50Hz printed test tone (VU reads -1db) and about a 1db loss at 100Hz (VU reads 0db) lower bass response. When nothing is connected to the Tape Outs I get the low e...

Tascam 388: Dead channels a result of loose snake ends
Long story short: I used to keep a snake patched up to the Tape-Outs on the rear of my Tascam 388 while the other end of the snake frequently sits unpatched and hanging out through an open rack space. I would patch them up only when transferring tape recordings to my DAW. The loose ends of my snake ...

Re: low playback levels on playback on channels 1 & 8
Further testing of my Tascam 388 shows recorded material on tracks 1 and 8 sound like crap on playback (low levels and distorted). This seems to be a common problem on the 388. I solved the issue with a fairly simple adjustment. If you follow the tape path on playback you will see a large tape guid...

So back to the original question. Do you tune the vocals because the band wants them tuned or do you spend a bunch of time telling them why they don't need to be tuned? If I were in the OP's position and strongly felt that that tuning the vocals was unnecessary and would negatively affect the final...

Before you even set up mics you should be spending a good amount of time testing combinations of basses and amps. If you aren't happy with the sound in the room then you aren't going to be happy with the playback. Rent gear if you need to. If you're doing rock electric bass get ahold of an Ampeg B-1...
