So in an XLR to RCA cable do you float the negative lead on the RCA end (only use hot and ground) or do you tie it to ground? I have been floating it when I need to do this. I was just wondering what others are doing.

Gravy Boat - use a mic preamp that has a lot of gain and a clean signal path. My Millennia Media HV-3 does a nice job of this. I have an SM-33 ribbon that has been fun to work with.

I have two channels stock and two with the burr brown opamps in my Sytek. A great unit (four total channels for well under 1,000). If you are currently looking to move up from mackie type mic preamps give it a try.
