Steve Albini AMA
Hey, I don't know if any of y'all would be interested, but Steve Albini is scheduled to do an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit tomorrow at 3pm. Pretty much people ask him whatever they want and he tries to get through and answer everything. They can be pretty cool, so I thought I'd let the board know...

Forget school. Seriously. If you really enjoy music, music production, recording, etc. and are self-motivated, then most schools have nothing to offer you but debt. I'm going to Belmont University right now for audio, and while I've had some great opportunities, 90% of everything I've learned has be...

I would say forget it, unless the aesthetics bug you or you want to sell it and think it would be worth it to replace it... I'm sure if you were in a perfect room using a totally transparent pre through awesome converters and a fantastic monitoring system you might be able to tell a difference, but ...

Personally, I think what I've heard so far could use a little eq sculpting. Particularly the solo guitar thing. I can see not wanting to squash this stuff with compression, and in a way, that guitar is already almost too "present". but it sounds a little uneven to me and that guitar booms out in th...

I finally have some rough mixes for review :) These were all tracked at 24/96, but these .wav files are all 16/44.1. This first one is a cover of Randy Newman's 'Losing You' with just nylon string guitar and vocal. Very simplistic arrangement, but I dig it. The guitar was recorded with 2 Studer SKM5...

Here's the deal. I've had two sessions with a friend of mine who's working on a bluegrass/folk/americana type album, and I'm engineering/co-producing. We've got three songs totally finished tracking, and a couple more almost there. My issue is that I'm feeling insecure about the impending mix. I've ...

Wouldn't mults be the best way to go? The only way I can see to use mults in this situation would be: Mic => CLM Inputs => Mults => 1 split to Recorder/1 split to Mackie for Mon. Mix Is that what you're suggesting? If so, it would definitely work, but I think it's unnecessary, and it loses the poss...

Apparently there is such a thing as a DSP clock. http://www.springerlink.com/content/m453625099413v34/ Protools can even throw a DSP clock error.... http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=57809 I don't know what it does, but I would assume that errors in its function could cause errors in the resulta...

So if this mixer magically fixes "DSP clock errors," it's of no benefit to use it to sum analog source material, right? This isn't what I gathered from reading their website...I understood them to be saying that the mixer simply avoids the DSP clock errors by summing in the analog domain, but the c...
