As a curio I found this page from Bureau of Labor Statistics. Basically says that sound engineering is 16% female. Unfortunately there's no statistic for lighting techs.

For the purpose of these kinds of threads I propose that: Piracy is not stealing. Making a copy of a product is not stealing. As to whether it should be illegal or not, that is the discussion. But it is not stealing. Before copyright law existed, composers and artists were often dirt poor. Performin...

Re: Solfeggio Frequencies

A helpful Wikipedia article. Also covers "pitch inflation". There's nothing stopping you from tuning your instruments any way you want, as many orchestras do in reality. Blaming the Nazis is just silly. You might be interested in checking out some microtonal modern composed music (try Iannis ...

Some select labels like Linn have been offering masters for download for a while now. Makes sense, since they sell mostly to audiophiles anyway.

Apple on the other hand? Not so much.

Re: Neve 10884 MicPre - No Gain

The signal goes thru its path according to the schemo, Input>relay>Xformer> 2 resistors, and the to pins 2+3 on a 5534 chip. It then is supposed to show up on pin 6 of the 5534 (audio output) but there is no signal there. A quick glance at a pin-out shows pin 2 as inverting input and pin 3 as non-in...

I'd take Sound Devices 788t SSD. Two pairs of C414 and four DPA 4060 lavs with XLR adapters. Or maybe a couple of wireless pairs, they don't weight much. Sennheiser 416 shotgun and a boom. Mic stands are pretty ubiquitous so I'd borrow those at the location when needed. That lot should fit in a back...

Is there a particular reason you've flood lit the whole floor? In our chroma studio we use standard four point lighting with 650w Arri with some halogen wall-washers lighting the screen. Never much of a problem. The big studios are a major pain with thirty Arris in the ceiling, all dimmed. It's mech...

I just tracked vocals for a friends band last week, and we experimented with backing vocals being sung through an actual vacuum tube, no pun intended, and we got some interesting results. Aha, this reminds me of a ghetto flanger I made as a kid. It consisted of a cardboard tube with a headphone spe...

You say this is for a school project? How many channels do you have available? I say do as many set-ups as you can fit in your channels because that's the most valuable lesson to be learnt. There's good and bad in all the micing techniques. I'd do a Recorderman with the C460, ORTF overheads with C45...

My experience with the DT770M is that the frequency balance is seriously weird. I've done a couple of live-to-tape concert mixes with them. After the first I spent a day fixing the mix in post since the balance was so off. Personally won't touch them anymore. But the isolation is good, sure.

Mackie's Tracktion UI was built the other way. More like a classic tracker than a DAW. Ableton Live doesn't look much like a hardware anything. But... The real problem with computer DAWs is that they are still very clunky to operate using a mouse interface and that's probably something that can't be...

I think TED talks are generally amazing, so technically the job would be worth $6500 to me. Especially as it's sold out as usual. Still, I wouldn't do the gig unless I lived in the area and had the week off.

If you wanted durability you wouldn't choose Toslink to begin with. That's why there's the balanced AES/EBU cables.

The point is it still nulled perfectly against the ripped wav file from the original CD, which means none of this expensive digital cable crap amounts to a hill of beans. Just to be clear, the interface I was using with PT was a MH 2882. Interestingly enough, when I clocked the DVD player to the MH...
