Re: CASSETTE TAPE LIFESPAN
my cache of tape is all NOS, i find it's better formulation than the new stuff. it's all over 25 years old and works/sounds wonderful. i keep it in a climate controlled closet out of the sun. i have close to 100 tapes and whenever i pull a new one to record, works like a charm. i find NOS tape chea...

Re: DI bass and guitar
I've been using the Retrospec Juice Box as my go to bass DI for years now. I'll usually record the amp or reamp it later and blend the two. My next bass session i'm going to try to just use the Juice Box and a Sans Amp Bass driver, two separate tracks and see if that works just as well. are you usi...

Re: AIAB pedals
my wife goes to bed at 9p and i have young kids, so i'm all headphones for anything musical at night. for me the best Amp in a box is the original, the Marshall Guv'Nor. The first AIAB released in 1989 it sounds great, i use it on electric piano.

Re: Curiosity about 1/2" 16-tracks w/ RCA inputs
i believe tapeop forum member A. David McKinnion (Sp?) has a Tascam MSR-16 that he uses in his studio, i believe it's 16 tracks on 1/2", you could try reaching out to him via PM for advice, he's a super friendly guy that has helped me in the past with random questions on stuff. you're going to need ...

Re: Curiosity about 1/2" 16-tracks w/ RCA inputs
the mixers back then had unbalanced connections (Tascam mixer, Sound Workshop 1280, etc) so it wasn't an issue.
for nowadays you can also use Tascam LA-40, LA-41 which are similar to the ebtechs, you can find them used for cheap.

Organ, guitar, some preamps, some tape decks, some pedals. mass exodus in my studio here, just trying to simplify and have around stuff i use instead of having it "for that one thing in the future i hope". being more realistic with what i can and can't do and working within that instead of being ove...

Re: 246 v 424
i've recently been through a large unofficial test of 4 track portastudios. Teac 144, Tascam 244, Tascam 414, Fostex 250, Marantz PMD720. I've also owned 488mkII and 238 and 388. I, like yourself, lusted after vintage and VU and got the 244 hearing about the "mojo" of those vintage preamps (144 as w...
