Taking a specific vocal sound to live settings

Hey guys - So I'm on the brink of taking the plunge and trying to take a project I've done on my own in the studio over the last year and a half, and make a live band out of it. Really exciting, but terrifying because I've never vocally fronted a band - done a million guitar & BV sideman gigs,2 mill...

Re: tracking headphones 2019 (for the performers)

I went for a set AKG K52's too (price, not too shameful sound) but once I've sorted levels and sounds out at my end I give my DT770's to the most important person in the band, or the "most likely to be a dick" person in the band if there's a clear winner of that prize, and I listen in whatever's lef...

Console in 1974 at Warner Bros, Hollywood? Ry Cooder sound

Happy New Year folks!
Just wondered if anyone knew what console/setup was used to record Ry Cooder's "Paradise and Lunch"? 1974 Warner Bros studio in Hollywood.
It sounds so great to me but I can't really find much google info...

Re: Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain --> thoughts?

I've been using this for the last couple of months - it pretty much lives on my 2buss with the spreader at 2, the cassette at 7.5 boost, and an MS filter putting sub 110 into mono by cutting it from sides. The limiter in parallel Modern mode does a good perceived loudness boost. EQ has band listen w...

Ha! And now I'm writing things a bit like you're suggesting!!
This is great - I'm glad I wasn't wasting time on a dumb approach and you've fed me more ideas to push a bit further with.
Cheers guys

Re: Getting organ bass to translate to small speakers

Thanks for the ideas - I hadn't thought of crushing pre OD, I think that might help make a more even result. The band was just singer, drums, organ so it's literally the only harmonic element. My parallel buss chain went: Low pass at 100ish (to single out pedals and dodge low end of chord mush) > De...

Re: Best Possible Vocal Recording

I have a bottle of red nail varnish in the studio for making big dots on the front of ambiguous mics - it's been there ever since I did a whole day tracking with a Beyer Opus 65 backwards on kick and had to "drum replace" on the quiet to avoid embarrassment... That's the danger of a one-room setup! ...

Re: Getting organ bass to translate to small speakers

Oh yes, stereo - it's okay, I've only been doing the extreme filtering and drive on the mono amp mic feed so I'm safe there.

Re: Getting organ bass to translate to small speakers

There can be no retracking, sadly - I just have to work with what I have. My understanding of the saturation approach is that it should create some upper harmonics based on the fundamentals I feed it, but it's true that there is no real high end to the product of my attempts at the process... I thin...

Getting organ bass to translate to small speakers

Hi guys I recorded a trio the other day and the organ player used a really clean low bass sound - sine wave, pretty much - and it just disappears on iphone/laptop speakers. I took stereo Di and mic'd his (again, clean sounding) monitor in the room. I had room mics up too so the bass is represented o...

Re: Laurel or Yanni, is my hearing severely compromised?

I listened to this the other day and found it hilarious - I instantly heard yanni in the kind of helium voice, had no idea where the laurel part was meant to be coming from, then when my friend did an impression of the low laurel voice I flipped onto it, burst out laughing, managed to switch a coupl...

When the mix collapses to mono, you lose the sides completely.
Oh yeah - forgot about that...

My 4038 may live to hear another day - M160 beats it for this purpose, just fresher and lighter on its feet.
