Re: pan your drums out of the center
...in order to hear individual drums "panned" in real life, you have to be reeeeeally close to the kit. A drummer friend did a recording at my place and asked for hats and toms more spread out - when I said, "Dude, you know you're the only person in either band or audience who hears your drums like...

Re: Vinyl surface noise
I decided to experiment a bit on one side of a disc (I have quite a few records in this state where I just avoid playing them) so I first tried a brand new soft pile cleaning cloth with hand soap and warm water - definite improvement. Then I went harder core (more reckless) and used a new toothbrush...

Re: Vinyl surface noise
Given the calibre of people that worked on that album, an unplayably shit pressing would be a travesty!

Re: pan your drums out of the center
I listened to Son Of A Preacher on headphones a couple of weeks ago and it's very LCR - only thing in the middle is Dusty, bass and drums all right except drum verb in left, guitars all left I think I remember correctly. Then listened to the Aretha version and it had same layout! So I've given it a ...

Vinyl surface noise
I have a few records which are modern and virtually new but have an unlistenable amount of surface crackle noise throughout - I don't understand how it's so bad!? Yet I have lots of 70's records that are fine. I neither care for them meticulously nor abuse them. Joanna Newsom "Divers" has probably h...

Re: Coronavirus Plans (what are yours?)
Well, we're on lockdown here in UK now so Canyon Sound (my only income source other than PRS royalties on library music I used to make) is dormant but still costing me the full £700 a month in rent... So I'm kind of doomed if the government doesn't deem me eligible for a £10k small business grant. F...

Re: Wave Anomaly
3" in from edge, 4" out from skin. It was sounding good! No pad on mic tho so padded at the VP28 preamp, no attenuation required after the pre. Do reckon it's still a distortion where the capsule's being overloaded?

Wave Anomaly
I recorded a couple of mics on kick to compare sounds and noticed this "wave within the wave" on the LDC (light grey)where the ribbon has no sign of it. Anyone know what that is? It doesn't sound odd at all, just interested...

Re: Limiter on rough mixes
I've been sending k-14 mixes to clients for listening - for me that's typically just tickling the ceiling on Fabfilter Pro-L since I've always used a Magic Death Eye buss comp before it doing 1 or 2 dB reduction. Then for mastering I'm making k-20 mixes with the same buss comp for sound, just reduci...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
I've got D112, Beyer Opus 65, Sen 602, Shure 52, RE20, SM7, Heil PR40 at my place, almost all of which have been mentioned I think, but I made up one of those Microphone Parts RK47 kits with one of their Shoeps-ish transformerless circuit (it was reviewed a few years ago in Tape Op) and while that m...

Re: Mastering To Or For Different Players Yikes Earbuds?
There's a pretty neat little plugin by Airwindows called "Monitoring" that replicates a few different types of speaker response and is super-handy for on the fly checking. I realise this might not be as good as going to the real thing but flicking to the PHONE setting for a couple of bars may be all...

Re: Advice on next steps to move setup forward
Thanks for your thoughts Nick I think clients expect to see a console but having said that, they don't seem to mind my explanation that my CAPI stuff is a replica of blah blah blah from America ("Oooooooh Ameeeerica?!!"), and I think I get a nice connection going with the people I have in once we're...

Advice on next steps to move setup forward
I’m considering what my next step should be gear-wise: I run a single room setup for a living, I use Reaper through Orion 32+, I have a good set of mics I like now that work in my room for the kind of bands I record, and I’ve been really enjoying the results I get using a pair of CAPI VP28’s in line...
